? For Professional Groomer or Pug Owners I need a little help.... We've adopted an 8 month old Pug. He is a sweetheart and we've already fallen in love with this big boy. My questions are how often to bathe? Cleaning the skin folds on his face. And the biggy - What can I do to lessen his shedding? Thanks a bunch for your advice!!! :animal36 |
I had Pugs years ago. I cleaned the nose wrinkles once per week with a Q-tip soaked in rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, a boric acid mixture(eye cleaning mix). You need to keep the inside of those wrinkles dry as a fungus skin problem can start. I couldnt find anything to stop the constant shedding. None of my friends that had them could either. Just have to constantly brush and use alot of tape for clothes and furniture. |
Thanks for the reply. I'm not real thrilled about the shedding but guess we will deal with it. He's a great bath taker which is a welcome change from my three terrors (i mean terriers) :D . I searched for a pug site like YT but of course they have nothing that can compare to this wonderful forum. Any other hints and advice will be greatly appreciated. |
pugs shed a lot unfortunately. Keep his skin folds clean with water soapy water at least once a week if not more often. Nothing worse then stinky face. Also pugs tend to get really fat. Its rare to see a healthy weight pug come in to the vets office, so my advise is to keep a strict eye on his diet. |
I own 2 pugs, and the ONLY thing I have found to help with shedding is a comb called the Furminator. I ordered it online, from either Petco or PetSmart. It comes in a couple of sizes, I ordered the yellow one and it is the right size. This has special "teeth" that strip out the loose undercoat, which is what sheds. (Doesn't hurt them at all, they actually like it now that they are used to being brushed) The first time I used it--you should have seen the hair! I could have knitted a sweater. I feel this really helps with shedding; I would estimated that my dogs shed about 70% less now. When I first got it, I used it on them every 3 days for about 2 weeks. And now I use it once a week. It is a little pricey (seems like around $30 maybe) but for me it is well worth it. Furminator also has a shedding shampoo to be used along with it, but I haven't tried that. |

I haven't seen the ZoomGroom, per se, but I have a similar rubber tool I use to remove hair from the sofa. It works great for this purpose, but I have also tried it on the dogs themselves (just to see) and found that the Furminator works MUCH better. The rubber tool seemed to pick up hair that was falling out already, but the Furminator actually removes the undercoat. But you may be very right about it being good for bathing, I haven't tried that. Also wanted to comment on the weight issues...I watch this very carefully, as I really feel that excess weight is a big contributor to excess breathing problems (although as you may know pugs have these problems regardless of weight). But I have found that even a couple of extra pounds makes a difference in how they breathe. I keep food out all the time, but I can do this because neither of mine tend to overeat. The thing that makes the difference for us is exercise. Many people think that pugs are so inactive that they don't need exercise--but they do. We walk every day. Recently my oldest pug gained a couple of pounds. We now walk just 5 minutes longer each day, and he is losing it. |

We went to Petsmart today and picked up the Zoomgroom and a product by Bamboo that is similar to the Furminator. It works pretty good, the Zoomgroom though I think will just be a bath aide. They had the Furminator too, it was $60.00, may try to find that online. We saw a six year old female pug, her owners have her on a diet. She weighed 27lbs. :( Hoping we don't end up with the weight issues. He's getting lots of exercise playing chase with my other pups and my son as well as our walks. |
