Stinky Face And Runny Eyes
 

Hi all, Im trying to find help for a friend, She just bought her babie last week, He is 7mths old, His face stinks and his eyes water really bad, I know my babies eye water a bit, but they dont smell, do you think it could be an affection of his ears or something? She asked me to let her bring him over so i could help bath him, ok im not being rude, BUT I know nothing about this , and im just so cautious about a strange dog aroung my 4, I told her to make a vet appt, so she did for tue, in the mean time any suggestions?? btw.. he has not had his rabies yet either:( do you think its safe for him to be around my babies ? thanks all.

Bella's face get's stinky when it nears bath day. I keep her eye gunk cleaned up pretty well to but I know thats what causes it. Tell your friend to get some tearless shampoo and a flea comb. Wash the pups face with warm water and the shampoo and the gunk will loosen up nicely.. then use the flea comb to comb it all out.

sometimes Gino gets stink face when he tears alot. I use the bath wipes.

I do call him stink face sometimes. LOL

Mojo gets a stinky face every now and then too. We keep his hair long and his eyes do get watery and gunky sometimes. I used baby shampoo and wash his face good and use a small flea comb as well! :thumbs_up
I have some tiny trimmers for the feet, ears, around eyes, etc...they work great for this area!

He went to the vet yesterday and had a clean bill of heath, got all his shots, icluding rabies, vet said there is no infections and to use saline in his eyes and just keep them clean, and to feed him at least 3x a day, he only weighs 3lbs. thanks for your input:)

I've frequently heard this in the Maltese community but there is a product out there that is called Angels Glow. It is a narrow spectrum antibiotic that kills the red yeast that colonize on the hair near the tear ducts. The yeast loves the constant moisture and thrive. This is what causes the smell and also creates tear stains. Granted, the tear stains are a lot more prevalent on a Maltese but none the less Yorkies still get them.

Originally I considered using this product because my dog is in wraps and it would not allow the red yeast to colonize but since I have a hard enough time getting him to eat as it is, adding another product to the menu didnt sound appetizing for me.

Some of the Maltese people rave over it. Its a powder added to the food that works like an antibiotic, targeted to kill only this specific bacteria. When used as directed prevents the colonization of red yeast which eliminates tear stains and that bad mildewy odor. The bad side is that you have to use it very consistently as misuse, with any antibiotic, can cause the yeast to become resistent.

Remi's eyes used to constantly be full of boogies until we cut the hair between his eyes and his bangs short. Now they almost never weep. As for the smell, he loves his kitty poo and hunts it down in the back yard, so his face is always stinky:rolleyes: .

Pipers eyes are much better when his hair is cut short around his eyes. I use Johnsons baby shampoo and a little comb to get it out.

My Jack and my new baby Willie get this. It is usually when they are nearing bath time. I do find that Jack's eyes water alot more when the seasons are changing. I think it is most likely allergies. I use alittle bit of rinse free soap and a warm wash cloth to clean stinky faces between bathing. Also, they have these new cleaning cloths for dogs at walmart that work great for getting the stink and goo off of their faces. I would assume that baby wipes work just as good. HTH

My vet told me to use mineral oil. You can get it at the grocery store or
Wal-mart. It's tasteless and odorless.I just dip my fingertip in it and rub it on the eye booger (that's what I've always called them)and it will loosen it up before I give Lulu a bath or in between baths if she needs it. I tried to use Diamond Eye on her and that was a waste of money because she won't let me get it near her because it stinks.

Did anyone but me notice that most of the postings about yucky eye boogers are about male dogs? We have 6 yorkies, 3 male and 3 females. My male dogs (age 3, 6, and 12) have to have their eyes cleaned with mineral oil and a comb atleast twice a week and my females (age 5,6, and 14) never. I 've alway thought it was odd, but reading these postings makes me wonder.

It's just the opposite with mine.
My little boy never gets dirty eyes but the girls all have them.

I use Johnson's Baby shampoo when I wash their faces. In between times I wipe away the gunk with a fragrance free baby wipe & then brush Bac To Nature Face Stain Remover on the brown stains with a baby's soft toothbrush. This keeps it under control.

I give Deuce Baby Water. That works with the eye tears too. Less chemicals in the water.

And I'm sooooo glad that i came across this posting b/c when i was having bottled water delivered and only using that for me and Bella....i would have to clean her eyes once a day and it was just a few "goobers"
Ever since i moved I'm just using a water filter pitcher (which i know in sad reality only really takes out some chorine and more for taste).....her poor eyes have been watering / staining / smelling like crazy. My vet tech swears its b/c i "refuse" to trim hair by her eyes" which I've always felt is not the case ....so thank you for the input - I'm going to try a trial w/using only bottled water. Will update you all and see if that helps...

as an FYI to who started this and asked
1. Chis Christensen "peace kindness" was recc to me - but i haven't used to long enough to see if it helps - will let you know about that product too. Its basically water and colloidal silver to help kill the bacteria.
2. And i agree w/ what someone else wrote that like humans - eyes tear more when dry .....so some simple saline eye drops might help as well - mom's yorkie had horrible problems and her vet suggested this. so if dry eye is the problem - that should help:)

You can buy Baby Water aka Nursery Purified Water in the Baby Food aisle of the Supermarket. It comes by the gallon. It's steam distilled so I guess you can just get distilled water. It's used to be mixed with baby formula, cereal and juice. It has fluoride in it so I figure it helps his teeth too. Well anyway I find it controls the eye mess and no matter where we go I keep what he eats and drinks consistent.
