question about clippers Believe it or not (and you won't after this question) I went to school to do people hair. LOL I bought Andis clippers from Petco because I will be grooming Bella and her new baby sister when she comes home on my own. The Clippers did come with an intruction book that my 2yr old promptly lost on me. :) In the kit I have one blade that came on the clippers and it has 3 or 4 combs/guards whatever they are called. I have attempted to use these things once and have no idea what the heck i'm doing wrong. The guards don't "snap" on and fall off really easy. I do know how to use a clipper with guards, I have 5 boys that I clipper cut more often then I want to :) I hear people talking about different blades they have, what do the different blades do? I know i'm asking alot but could someone please help me out, I feel so stupid |
I have an Andis clipper and when I got the comb attachments I couldn't get them on. I called customer service and while I was on hold for the 3rd time I realized that I had to clip the comb on the back and REALLY push hard to slide the attachment up to the blade so it would click on. Maybe that's the problem? |
Hokule'a described the same problem I had when I put the blade attachement on. You do have to clip one side and pull it over to the other. Even after getting the attachments (guards) on I am never able to get an even cut. Is there a proper way to use them. I used the clippers just as I would without the guard, from front to back and it always ends up choppy. :( |
Some of those 'pet' clippers can be really difficult to get the blade on (my mom bought me a pair when I was younger). Now the more expensive ones do have differnet blades that can come off and be changed. What I would do is look up Andis websight and get their cusotmer service number and call them, they should be open tomorrow morning. |
To cut a silk coat with a snap on is very hard to get a nice even cut, you must back brush the hair then run the clipper over it several times. Trimming a soft coat the hair stands up nicer and a smother cut is attained. Most of the time I hand scissor silk coats to get them smooth. So one more time so you understand... Brush the hair toward the head and then run the clippers with the lay of the hair ( from head to tail) do this several times until it is looking smooth. Best of luck to you. no I hand scissor their coats just like when you get your hair cut I hold the hair between my index and middle finger and pull the hair out from the skin at the length I want it to be , but you have to angle each section to get it even. I was a hair dresser before I went to grooming dogs so some of the things I can do are pretty amazing..... It takes a lot of experience. The groomers I teach all learn to scissor like I do as it gives them an edge up. |
As far as clippers go, which # blades would ya'll recommend for sanitary areas, and clipping throughout the body? What are those snap-on combs used for? |
It depends on what clipper you are using. If you are using an oster or Andis never use anything shorter than a #10 blade for the sanitary area, or you may get irritation or clipper burn. The snap ons are used for cutting the hair longer. |

For yorkies just get the Andis one speed and they come with a # 10 blade for the face and feet and sanitary trimming then you just have to decide how long you want the body coat. |
