VCO experiment
 

i ran out of PP seabreeze oil for my yorkie, and it's bath day tom..since there has been a marked improvement with sea breeze, i didn't want charming's coat to go back to that cottony fluff type he had when i first got him..

i give virgin coconut oil (half teaspoon a day) for his coat, so i decided to use it on his hair..:rolleyes: it's way too greasy to use everyday ( i just tipped the bottle, with my palm in the opening, so i just got a super tiny amount, and it was still WAY too oily for my taste), but for tonight i left it on him..since that's how it is used for human hair (leave it on then wash the next day) for best results..

tomorrow morning i will be bathing him, hoping for fab results...

but as he is only a puppy, his hair ends looks a bit dry ( to my thinking) while i am growing his coat..is there something i can put on the ends of his hair only? i've seen these hair vitamins (jojoba oil, vit A, etc etc) for humans in our local drugstore (been wanting to try it out for ME actually), would that help the hair tips so it doesn't look dry and fly awayish? the breeder told me i should be oiling his coat already, since it is attaining SOME length, would this suffice?

if VCO just didnt have a too greasy effect, i would use the stuff, but it's hard to play with a puppy who is oily, and he is just not for cuddling with the oil on him..

oh!! a drawback in giving VCO, since he recognizes the scent (as it is included in his meals), he has been licking his coat :D one would think i was starving him..

I bought some virgin coconut oil on recommendation from a lady that is helping me get Cali to stop scratching. She is on 3 supplements. I have a ton of the coconut oil but don't know what to do with it? DO you mix a certain amount in their food? If so how much? Do you refrigerate it after opening? Thanks for any info.

I just bought some Emu oil and was told that Almond oil works well too. I think they said put a "capfull" in 2 cups warm water and pour it over after shampooing, conditioning and rinsing. Do this 3 shampoo days and on the 4th use a clairying shampoo.

VO 5 Hot Oil treatment can be used but obviously needs to be rinsed out.

I've been researching this too. Try doing a search in the grooming thread for dry hair.

yep..all my dogs get vco in their food..my yorkie only gets 1/2 teaspoon a day, but all my other dogs (weighing 5kg up) get a tablespoon a day with their meals..their coats are super shiny..

some people here use it as an appetite stimulant for dogs..i dont refrigerate mine after opening, because the oil solidifies when the temperature drop down..

you can use it as an afterbath oil (instead of a lotion) on your skin, or a pre-conditioner before washing your hair..

i dont have any source for emu & almond oil (am in the philippines), but we have LOTS of coconut oil hehehe...

ok for results, am not that thrilled, it was soft, shiny but not as manageable compared when i am using seabreeze..the hair is fluffy/wavy (then again he is only 4 months old)...

will try using it long term though, as a pre wash conditioner, but after bathing will still use seabreeze (bought a bottle already)...

was thinking i COULD use it as his leave on oil WHEN his hair is longer...the amount i get might not have such a greasy effect by then, because he has more hair..

Sea breeze oil is great stuff! I need to get more of that too!

I bought some unrefined VCO for use on my two and for myself, but have not really used it.....I have heard a lot of people rave about it.
