Frizzy Hair?!?! Does anyone have or ever had a problem with their Yorkie's coat being almost frizzy? Gypsy's is really looking a mess... The front, (under her head and around her front legs and shoulders), is okay... it's straight like most Yorkie coats are but then about halfway down her back it changes... it's frizzy and once it's been brushed it just kind of, well looks a mess! :( I brush her everyday and everyday she has mats in her coat! I've just conditioner spray and it is still the same... She's just turned a year old and her adult coat is coming in underneath but the adult hair is exactly the same... If it was my hair then I would change my shampoo, sometimes I have shampoo that makes mine look awful, all fly away which I kinda guess hers is like! Anyone got any ideas, tips, had the same problem??? |
I'd try a different shampoo first, and if that doesn't work I'd try changing the conditioner. |

Sea breeze oil works well too and the makers of it has something called "fluffy butts" too. I have seen a lot of yorkies that have the "different" hair from their mid back to behind...it is odd. We use SheaPet and their extra conditioner (fur butter - fur worse)...it seems to work well. We also switched foods to Canidea and use Missing Link and that seems to have helped their hair 100% as well! Good luck and please keep us posted on what you use and what works for you! |
Sometimes if the coat has been cut short it will either change color or get fuzzy or curly from the waist down. I don't know the reason for this but it happens. I would suggest you use a very mild doggie shampoo even if you have to add water and dilute it down. Next and very important at keeping knots out and making brushing easy is to apply a really good conditioner. What I do is this.........I mix a little JoJoBa oil (probably about 10 drops)with #1 ALL SYSTEMS conditioner AND...MATRIX BIOLAGE hydratherapie OR PANTENE Nourishing. With cotten coats that matt easily, you have to be aggressive with the conditioner. ;) In the summer they get a hot oil treatment after their shampoo and before their conditioning, once a month. In the winter, I give them the hot oil treatment once a week after their shampoo and before their conditioning. |
For "cotton" coats ;) use the MATRIX or the PANTENE that are in the jars. Those and the #1 All SYSTEMS conditioner are all highly concentrated. |
Zoey's hair went fuzzy once. It was after we went to the beach and she wore a sweat shirt all day. The hair on her head was fine, but where the sweatshirt was, it was fuzzy, dry and looked damaged. I think the shirt rubbed it. After her next trim at the salon she looked much better. Split endz? |
Thank you all for the advice... I'm going to look at switching her shampoo and conditioner, I'm going to see about the fuffy butts one. I've added Missing Link to her diet last week and started to use the spray conditioner on her coat EVERYTIME she's brushed now. I've also started using a flexible plastic bristled brush and it seems to make it less frizzy and removes alot of the stray hair. I've noticed the hair that I put up in a topknot sometimes has actually split and now is too short to put up, I only put her hair in a topknot once in a while so it's not down to damage from the bands. Her hair has never had a cut so I don't think that could of caused anything. I think she's just destined to have a troublesome coat. I'm noticing alot of the darker puppy hairs are what are coming out and sticking to everything in the apartment so maybe once her full adult coat is in things will steady out... fingers crossed! Any other advice greatly recieved and appreciated. |
