Humane Society for Neutering? I know that this has been bought up in the past, but I just wanted to bring it back up. Mickey is 7 months now and ready to get neutered. I called the humane society, and they charge $43. I am hesitant because I do not know who the vet will be, but $43 is a lot better than the $250 that my vet is charging- and I haven't heard anything bad about the humane society. Before I make the decision, I need a few more opinions. With my vet, he comes home the same night - at the humane society he stays over night... which would be pretty traumatic for him i think. Mickey is 12 lbs already- I dont have a little 3 lb'er that I have to worry tooo too much about the anesthesia. I am really struggling with this decision! My vet, or humane society??? Help! I would love to hear your experiences! :confused: |
it is also about the same cost here in Houston. but our humane society doesn't keep the animal overnight. if your puppy has all his shots and is in otherwise good health, i think you should be ok w/the humane society. they most likely keep him overnight for observation and that would make me feel good. maybe you could bring him a blanket with your scent on it for comfort. and, it's better to get the neutering done then to wait because of money. talk to the vet at HS and ask them their procedures. it will probably be close to the same as at the vet office. |

I would more than trust any Vet. who works with the humane society. They probably do more spay and neuters on a weekly basis than a regular Vet. does in a year. You can also get them microchipped thru them at the same time for half the price anywhere else. My Vet. doesn't keep them overnight either unless there are complications, so no worry there. |

You're baby will be fine. YEARS ago when I volunteered at a humane society, they allowed me to observe the operations (spay/neuter) and once a bladder stone. The dogs and cats were WELL cared for and everything is made possible for them to feel comfortable before and after surgery. |

Ive never heard of asking the humane society to neuter my Reece...I wonder if they do that here in Canada...any Canadian members had this done before?? Dawn |
The only thing that concerns me is they dont do pre-op blood work. Well at least the one near me doesnt |
Your baby should be fine. If him being there overnight bothers you see if you can sign a release paper or something stating that you know the risks but still want to take him home. I had to do that with my cat when she was spayed at my vet's office. I just asked them if I could take her home that day so I can watch her overnight since no one is there at night with them. I signed a release form to take her home. |

Gizmo is a little over 4 lbs. and just turned five months. Is this the right time to have him neutered or should I wait a month or so? Until we know about baby teeth extraction? Here in Waco, the low-cost neuter is a different place from the humane society. It's another non-profit group. They do it for $35. I called and asked a lot of questions and they were very open and friendly. I think that's how we're going to go unless there's an issue with the baby teeth. Gizmo has his rabies shot in a couple of weeks and I guess I'll ask the vet to check his teeth then and make the final decision. |
surgery My vet used to volunteer at the HS..and all the new vets he took into his practice were required to volunteer.. He felt bloodwork was not necessary on a young, healthy Yorkie..infact I have never had blood work done on any one under 3 yrs for S/N... My daughter had her Yorkie spayed here in Florida at the HS and it cost her $5...and another $5 for rabies and $5 for a micro chip...$15 total..amazing..!!! |
