New and want a Yorkie!!!!!!!
 

I want a baby yorkie by my birthday Jan 30... I searched all oer the internet and really dont feel comfortable buying the puppy before i gget a chance to meet em. I leave in Jersey City NJ nd currently a college student. I am allowed to keep my pet on campus b/c i leave in an apt. Can any1 help me find a yorky in the price range of $400-$600???? I really want one by my birthday!!!!!!!!!!

a young lady on Craig's list that I have been in touch with for a few weeks before recently buying my puppy is selling a Yorkie male and female for $800 & $1100. She purchased the Yorkie from the same breeder that I did, S&V Quality canines in Bayridge and the pups have had their rabie shots.
She may go down on her price since she has been posting them for a few weeks, but I can't be sure.

I had sons who went to UCSB and Berkeley, so I know how difficult it is to have the time and money to devote to a puppy, especially a Yorkie that is high maintenance anyway. You have to be home constantly till you have it house trained it. It can't have run of the house. You can't leave it alone more than a couple of hours at a time. It has to eat at least 4 small meals a day. It isn't cheap to pay for the shots and to have it spayed or neutered. Have you read any books yet on raising a Yorkie? Please do your homework on Yorkies first. I don't think a college student should get a dog. One of my sons did that and it didn't work out at all. He now lives in San Francisco and has another dog thinking he can take care it it better. Now he wishes he hadn't gotten another dog, since he is single and would like more time to enjoy the single life. He is tied down like one who has a human baby. Please re-think your situation.

I agree, young, single people have a lot of demands on their time with school and social life and perhaps a job. A kitten would really be a better choice.

Dogs are hard work and the Yorkie breed is especially demanding. You will need to spend LOTS of time with your puppy everyday and if I remember correctly, a working college student doesn't have much free time to devote. Besides the training, feedings, walks and socializing your Yorkie will need, you'll also need lots of money-- Yorkies are EXPENSIVE. The first week I adopted my first Yorkie he got his paw stuck under a closing door-- $300 spent in less than 7 days for x-rays to make sure it wasn't broken.

Definitely consider adopting a cat for now...

Hi, welcome to YT. Around here your really not going to find a puppy for that price. Since your in school maybe a slightly older yorkie would be a better match. If you look on petfinder and just search for yorkies in this area you will find a lot. plus their adoption fees are usually between $100 and $400. when i first got morgan i took two weeks off from work to start training her and then when i went back to work i had to rush home on my lunch break to take her outside to pee and eat. I just stopped taking morgan out at lunch. she is 9 months old.

I really do appreciate ur advice. I live in apartments on campus and we are allowed to have pets. I don't party and socializw much, I usually jus go 2 class and come start back to my apartment. I have help to take care of the puppy and maintenece fees aren't a problem. I jus really dont want to spend too much. Hopefully u guys would understand that I'm really loked into it and am very capable in taking care of the yorkie...:)

You will be hard pressed to find a yorkie puppy for that price. And on top of that vet & grooming expenses do add up. And not to mention that puppies are very delicate. If you do find one around that price, be sure to have some extra funds saved up in case of emergency. 3 months after I got my baby he took a tumble down the steps and I had to pay $3000 in vet fees to get surgury on his leg. It sucks but accidents do happen. When getting a puppy you don't really think about these things, but reality of it is, it happens. Good luck in your search! I am a graduate student who just got a puppy in the end of December. I purposely got him during a school break so I could spend time training him. For two weeks I barely got out of my pajamas, all I did was chase Toto around and clean up after him, and then of course steal a quick nap when he fell asleep. He is a lot of work, however I do believe that most people who have dogs must work (if for nothing more then to afford the dog). So in that case a working adult probably has a more demanding schedule than a college student. I work three days a week at my internship and have to leave him alone for 10 hours. It's not my favorite thing to do, but puppy care is way too expensive. He does fine as long as he is confined to one room. I wonder sometimes about the people on this forum. . .how is it that they don't have to work or ever leave their house for more than a few hours?
That said, I would carefully consider your decision if you haven't gotten a puppy yet. I read Yorkies for Dummies before I purchased my pup. He was $600 and I got him on overnightpets.com, the breeder still has a few more, but the dogs are in KS. try puppylove4u.net. I have spent close to $2500 since I got him, so don't think there is a way to get out of it cheap.
