Brooklyn Breeder- to use or avoid? Any recommended breeders Hello- I'm new here, researching purchasing a Yorkie in NYC which will be my first dog. I'm really excited about this decision, but have had trouble finding a reputable place to get one from. I would like the dog to be on the smaller side (in an nyc apartment, the smaller the better so it can still have room to play indoors; ps- I have a large-sized apartment, not some 12x12 I'll be bringing a poor dog into). I know the issues and negative connotations associated with so-called "teacup" dogs, but this is essentially the size I am looking for (less than 6 lbs). I've come across this breeder, but can't find any reviews or additional information online about them. I know people look down on breeders using the term "teacup" , the reasons for which I totally understand- but if the breeder uses ethical practices and cares about the health of the dogs, I also think they shouldn't be penalized for trying to market their website using a buzzword which will help them attract customers and loving parents for the dogs.. Anyways , I digress.... NYC Yorkie: Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale in Brooklyn New York Any information, or better yet info from anyone who has used them, would be great! Or if anyone has suggestions on somewhere close to the city to get a healthy happy baby yorkie, any advice is greatly appreciated. |
Hello there and welcome to YT, I also live in NYC and advise you to please research where you get your pup from i purchased 1 of my girls from what i now believe was a backyard breeder in Staten island and poor thing has so many issues behavioral, allergies and very anxious. My second one i got from a breeder on this forum and have a healthy and happy puppy. Good luck on your search! |
You should check out the YTCA for breeders. |
Breeders I have used two different breeders in the last eight years and both pups had GIARDIA when I had vet check! I got them from YTCA, what is going on with these people????? |
I would skip that breeder. There are some red flags . . . I would check out YTCA website. . .there is also a few reputable breeders in NJ. |
Breeders YTCA is where I found the two breeders (recently from NJ) that I have used. My STAR died at 8YO after suffering trachea problems and last year severe allergies. So, I contacted this one from NJ, who espouses about his pups, but again GIARDIA. |
LAD, My puppy also came with Giardia :( My vet at the AMC in Manhattan said it is very common for puppies to have this parasite. So, who knows? It could the case of an unethical/backyard breeder or maybe this is more common that one thinks? My friend got her puppy from a breeder in Brooklyn and she has had no issues with her dog. I will see if I can get the information from her and then post it here. |
NYC MOM's Me too, I live on East 80th Street. I have had yorkies all my adult life. My first yorkie, HAZEL, in the 70's had no health issues that I can recall and died at 12yo. Star died 6/3/14 at 8yo = too young. Perhaps you can call me 212-744-9380 The last two (BB=6 months 6/30/14, & Star) having "G" really upsets me, but as stated it seems more common, today. But I don't think these breeders should be excused! Especially when they do not keep in contact and answer your questions..... Do you use AMC as your vet? April (who was 13 1/2 yo) died their after being ill....so it is hard to go back there unless it is an emergency... WHO can I trust anymore????? |
I am so sorry that you had such a negative experience at the AMC. Our vet was there, but she moved and recommended Dr. Heather Brausa at community practice who, like our old vet, specializes in small dog breeds. We haven't gotten a chance to see her yet, but if you know of another exceptionally good vet in Manhattan, please let me know. As for your comments regarding Giardia, I wholeheartedly agree. But that seems to be norm rather than the exception today :( Feel free to email me at YorkieMomNYC@gmail.com Have a happy and safe 4th. |
Amc I did not have a problem ,except when I brought her there after being in Bergh for 10 days, she had a seizure at home and dies when I rushed her to AMC on a Sunday...... So I cannot go back to the death bed. My other Yorkie dog fell down the stairs years ago (now I am a better mom) and died at Dr. T Deevincentis office, I cannot go back there either! Bad vibes/memories. I have been going to MVG on 80th Street for over 10 years and am continuing there since they are right down the block from me. The only problem I have is that the doctors leave after a few years and I use another of their vets. They have 3 on staff and open on Sundays. |
Thanks for information :) |
Breeders Having a "better" relationship with BBstar's breeder. Spoke to him on Sunday, when he talked for 1/2 hour! BB had rabies last night :)and has been fine. Today she had first heartworm "pill" and SIMPLEX. So now I can let her ot of bag when we go to Central Park in the AM. Feeling better, and have decided to spay her before first heat as suggested by my vet at MVG. I board pups in my home, so I feel more comfortable with spaying sooner than later..... |
Glad to hear that. We should meet up for a doggie playdate sometime. Cheers, D |
