Thinking about getting a Yorkie Hi my name is Maeve and i just joined the site! I was interested in adding a Yorkie to my family of 2 dogs, a Bichion and a Rat Terrior. I have been researching them on the internet but I would like an owners opinion of Yorkies. My Aunt had one that was not friendly and very yippy and I would like reassurance that all Yorkies are not like that! Also, I live in South Jersey and would like to get names of a few reliable breeders that you or your friends may have purchased Yorkies from! Thank-you!:) |
Hello and welcome to YT!! I just got my first Yorkie about a month ago and he has been the best ever! I love him so much! He was already 9 months old when I got him. He is just a big cuddly bug and not yippy at all. Yorkies are the best for sure! (Now I just wish I could talk my hubby into 2, they are addicting! LOL) |
I've had my Yorkie since January and love him to death. I have had a problem potty training him and have heard they are hard to potty train. Other than that he has been a great. I honestly wish I could talk my husband into getting another one. I would love to add a girl to my family. |
I've had Duke almost 2 years now. He is just a bundle of joy and love packed in a little 6lbs body. I love him dearly and he is very affectionate also, as it is common in male yorkie from what I hear. On a another note, I didn't have much problem with pee pad training him, the only problem is that I can't have rugs in the apt, he tends to pee on it thinking it was his pad. Barking...he barks when there are noises outside, but can be stop. Plus he will be 2 in October, many owner said that they calm down a bit once they are 2 years old so I'm hoping for that. He learns different commands quickly and listens to me when I call him. They are independent but def need to be walk or exercise daily. I'm sure with the other dogs in your house, they'll get plenty of exercise by playing with each other. Good luck, if I can think of anything else, I'll add on to the post. Good luck |
Socializing yorkies is very important. If you do they should be a happy well adjusted dog. |

Welcome to YT :wavey: I think a yorkie would be a great addition:D I got my first ever yorkie, Twinkle, last year....I was instantly smitten with this beautiful, clever breed and a few months ago I added a second, Wicket. I think it's a common misconception that small dogs, yorkies in particular, are yippy, and I've not found that to be the case with my two. I joined YT before I got Twinkle and I found it a great place to research....whatever the question, someone knows the answer, or has had personal experience of the problem. I wish you lots of luck in finding a yorkie of your own (after spending a little time here you will definitely want one! :) xxx |
I agree, yorkies are highly addictive, probably should carry a health warning, ahah. I've owned them for 20+ years and theres nothing like having one curled up on your lap. They all have different personalities, I had one shy of very young kids but loved older ones and adults, another that was shy of adults but loved kids. Spent 1 year without them and it drove me crazy, they really get under your skin. |
I just got a yorkie puppy last week. He is 3 months old and just weighs 3 pounds! He is absolutely the best thing that has happened to me (after getting married lol). He is very sweet, not yippy at old. He has been good so far, no barking but he cries alot when we leave him alone to play in the pen (like when I have to cook or clean). He loves to cuddle and is the happiest when he is on my lap sleeping and snoring. |
Yorkies should not be Yippie. We spend a lot of time socializing each of our puppies prior to them leaving for their new homes. They are raised with other breeds (Doberman and Jack Russel) in addition to a couple of cats. They very rarely bark (usually when playing or if someone is at the door). Yorkies should be very social and come running to play or just sit with you. You can see a few videos we took of Issac on our website. Go to Videos and click on the video 1, 2 or 3 links to download the videos. You'll also be able to see a few of our other Yorkies and their reactions. |
Welcome to YT!!! I have 2 furgirls and yes...they can be noisy...especially if someone comes to the door or, they hear someone walk past the house. As the above poster said...they will stop if I tell them to. They are VERY good watch dogs...they let you know when ANYTHING around... Mine are not human aggressive...Sadie (4yrs old) is the alpha dog and tends to be dog aggressive...not with every dog though. You WILL NOT be sorry owning one of these little cuddle bugs!! |
go to website wishbonek9kennel; i got my yorkie from there. they have good prices and they negotiate. email stephanie she's helpful. if you get one request for it to be shipped by air not ground. ground take few days and it's stressful on the little one. good luck |
