has anyone ever been to Vanity Pups (Bayside) or The Puppy Store (LI)
 

Thier website isnt great, but when we went there they only had yorkies, thats it. Supposedly the owner own two yorkies and breeds them and the set-up is nursery style.

The first place in Bayside seems like a Back Yard Breeder, and the place your hubby likes is a Pet Store that gets their pups from Puppymills.

I would stay FAR away from both :(

1st one -
She has multiple breeds on that site and also sells mixed breeds. She isn't solely breeding yorkies nor is she particularly interested in maintaining the standard of any purebreed.

The second is a pet store. Their puppies are gotten from puppy mills and you are supporting that industry if you purchase from them.

OMG really??? Im going to break my hubby's heart when I tell him that.. He bought a puppy there a long time ago (before we met) and love the little guy (it was a morkie).

Think about this: If YOU were a breeder, would YOU give your pups to a Pet Store, where they have just *random* people working there, and these *random* people *sell* YOUR pups to any Joe Smoe that walks off the street and has the *right* amount of cash :(

YES ~ Pretty much EVERY Pet Store gets their *stock* from Puppymills ~ sorry, but you and your hubby must be aware of this and PLEASE do not support it :(

There are no good pet stores. Because behind that cute puppy in the store...is a breeding pair stuck somewhere...being bred to death...to replace the cute puppy someone "rescued" from a pet store.

Actually I have never had a puppy (only pets Ive had are fish) .. so Im sorry to say that (this may be naive) I didnt even know about puppy mills until i started to research on the breed of dog that I wanted... I have recently read alot of info on the subject.. I wasnt trying to be difficult, I really didnt know ... I know better the more I look into this subject.. :) I def dont want to support puppy mills, they are horrible :( I really wanted all the info I can get my hands on before we get a puppy.

been to vanity pup...no different than any other petshops...except that i have seen cheaper "teacups" than their asing price of 1800:eek:

Just wanted to add that its VERY hard to find a good breeder within the 5 boroughs. My sister actually got her puppy from a breeder on YT and we went on 4 planes in a matter of 6 hours to get her.

I know! the boros are so shady!!! I contacted two breeders from YTCA ... waiting to hear back from them

I have just recently visited Vanity Pups in Bayside. They had a one Yorkie in the "nursery". The clerk gave me a card and instructions on how to look at pups on their website, get their listing # to get pricing. I e-mailed them 2 listings I was interested in. Two days later still hadn't heard anything I called- the person who answered the phone was not helpful at all. She said she would e-mail me the prices on the pups I was asking about. Day and half later I get an e-mail that says the pups I was interested in have been sold, but they have two more for viewing. :confused:

To be honest -- no, they do not all get their puppies from puppy mills. But, as said before, a truly caring breeder is not going to place their puppies in a pet store where just anyone can buy them. So, if they are not coming from a puppymill, at the best they are coming from back yard breeders. We have a pet store nearby that does maintain none of their dogs come from puppymills and all come from local breeders. They will give the local breeders info so you can check it out. They don't usually have many puppies to sell and they are random about what breeds are there. So, I believe them that they are getting them from small breeders locally. That may increase the odds that the dogs are taken care of better than a puppymill, but if the person does not care or know enough not to sell their dogs through a pet store -- what else do they not know or care about? Are they taking short cuts with having potential sires and dams checked out thoroughly by a vet and someone actually knowledgeable about conformation before they are bred? Checking histories on both sides for health and genetic problems? Are they following the best breeding practices? See what I mean?
