Traveling from Mexico to the U.S. Hi everyone. I want to get a puppy from Mexico and take it to the U.S. with me when I go home for my Christmas break. But, I was reading on some websites that all dogs have to have a rabbies vaccine. When do puppies get this vaccine? I will be getting a puppy that will be at least 8-12 weeks old by the time I leave. What exactly can I do? Has anyone traveled with a puppy without the rabbies vaccine? Also, it says a vet check needs to be done before leaving, but is the vet check valid for when I leave Mexico and come back? This is all so confusing, so I want to get as much info from the experts. :) If I need to have a puppy that is vaccinated against rabbies, then maybe I need to get a puppy now! Well, thanks to everyone again!!! |
We have traveled through Canada and to and from Japan with our dogs. Usually if your puppy is under a certain age they will wave the rabbies cert. but you will probably need a health cert from a vet. You need to get it within 10 days of travel as they are usually only good for the 10 days. With a little planning you should be fine. Kim |
My advice is to check with the athorities, to make sure you get the right information, so you won't get any disappointing surprises at the last minute. It might be better to wait and get your puppy in the states. |
When we went to Mexico, we got information from this website: www.pettravel.com It's very informative and gives you updated information based on what country you want to visit with your pets. We went to Mexico and had all of the documents in place, so getting through customs was rather easy. The rabies issue is one that you will need to research carefully based on where you are going. Your vet should be able to help you with this too. We flew on United and didn't have any problems. |
pet food and Canada An interesting issue that I didn't realize prior to taking my Yorkies into Canada is that when returning to the U.S., we were asked to show our dogs' pet food. Fortunately the food was in the original bag, that showed the food was made in the U.S. Had it been in a different container, they would have confiscated the food, because they wanted to ensure that the food was made here. It didn't matter that we had the food when we went into Canada, they would have taken it anyway. Make sure you keep the food in the original bag. |
I bought a little female dog in Mexico about 4 years agao, and all I needed to bring her back with me was her shot record and a letter from the vet stating that she had no contagious diseases, it was pretty simple, but then again that was 4 years ago. |
Thanks Thanks for all the information. I read that website and it says that going into the U.S. the rabbies requirement is waived if the puppy is under 3 months of age. Coming into Mexico is when it says the puppy needs to have the rabbies vaccine. I think I'll get that in the U.S. while I'm there, since the puppy will probably turn 3 months by that time. All I need is a vet certificate that is no more than 10 days old. I already looked at the airplane requirements, so I think it should be okay. Thanks again for all your help everyone! |

I thought that was a little weird too. I read on this forum in the "vaccine" section that rabies was needed until they were 6 months. Well, I'm going to return to Mexico driving, so I'm sure they won't be as picky as the airlines might be. Although I've heard of some people not even needing to show the vaccination records. Thanks for all the imput. As soon as I get a puppy (:D ) and as soon as I go through this, I'll let everyone know who it went. Expect that to be sometime after January. All I have to do right now is look for a puppy that will be ready sometime mid November, so I have enough time to get the vet check and any other things before I go home. I'm super excited!!! |

Yeah is pretty simple, you only need a shot record so if it is a puppy it only needs to be up to date. I take mine often to mexico with me I'm only 2 hrs away from the border of Eagle Pass, TX. and they usually don't even ask for anything for the dog. I would do what tinker's mommy stated just to have something extra but believe me it wouldn't be a problem to bring your baby into us. |
