Benedryl to calm in the car?
 
I am going to be driving to Washington state next month from San Francisco, CA. Wesley has really bad anxiety in the car. He won't sit still, he tries to jump onto the front seats from the back seat (though he is buckled in his Lookout carseat), and sometimes he makes himself throw up. So we have decided that we are going to give him something to calm him before we leave.

My vet suggested giving him Benedryl (w/o any additives). She said to give him 1 mg per pound.

Has anyone else used this?
What was your experience?
What dose did you give?

We are going to try this out on him this weekend on a shorter trip. Our vet also said that if the Benedryl doesn't work, she can prescribe something for him.

Has anyone ever used something they've been perscribed?

Some people were suggesting a natural something from Petsmart to help with fireworks. You might want to do a search that. Might be better then benadryl and it's natural.

I use Calm Moments. you can get it at Petsmart and it DOES NOT cause them to be dopey. and you give just once a day :D
it is all natural and it is only about $10.00 for 100 tabs I give my 5 pound baby a 1/4 tab.

I have heard of the calm remedy they sell and ppl said it works. I would like to try it for Teddy too cause he goes crazy in car rides.

I've used a couple of things, but not Benadryl. It's interesting that your vet recommends it though, b/c I think we need something a little stronger. I'm going to purchase the Calm Moments first though and try it out.
Can I make just one suggestion to you though? Whatever you are going to use, try it out at HOME first. That way, if your baby has any untoward effects (and you never know...Max started hallucinating when I gave him Nature's Remedy), at least you're at home, near your own vet just in case! Plus, you'll know if it at least helps. If it doesn't do anything while the dog's at home, it sure isn't going to do anything in the car. On the other hand, you never know if it will work in the car til you take them in it. But still, I'd want the first dose to be on home ground, where if anything happens, I'm not out on I-5 with a sick dog!

the nice thing with Calm moments is if you don't like it or it don't work you can take it back :) I also wrap mine in Cheese to the eat it like a yummy treat :)

Oh an to help you find it it has a picture of a golden retriever on the front.

That is a very good idea. I will try giving it at home first. That is...once i decide what "it" is! :rolleyes:

i would not give benedryl if it wasnt an allergic reaction that you are treating. the vet has specific pills for traveling!!!

Acepromazine is one of the most commonly used tranquilizers in veterinary medicine. It is a phenothiazine compound. Its mode of action is only partially understood but it involves blockage of dopamine nerve receptors in the brain. It causes tranquilization and also has an anti-emetic effect. My vet recommended 1ml Childrens Benadryl 30 minutes prior to departure.(the one without alcohol) We tried this at home first and she had no adverse reactions. She wasn't dopey on our trip nor was she jumping around and thowing up.

Hmmm....that sounds like it might work! I've got the Children's Benadryl just in case Max got stung or had an allergic reaction to anything (like a scorpion)...maybe it would help him in the car. I don't want him knocked out, but it would be nice to have him be calmer on long trips. Thanks for the doseage and directions!
I am going to find the Quiet Moments, just to test it out though. I know Bendryl (diphenhydramine) makes me really sleepy and feeling drugged the next day; but dogs aren't the same as humans, so maybe it will affect him in a GOOD way!

Oops...Stella's Mom....how much does your dog weigh?

I would never give my dogs any medication unless they were very sick and needed it. Try Rescue Remedy. It's made from natural herbs. Give four drops 45 minutes before a trip.

I use to use RR but when I found the Calm Moments and it has the same stuff in it and you only give once a day :) And it is not as $$$$.

i have a little puppy yorkie he is maybe 4 pounds can i still give that to him

It does say on the bottle what age I just can't remember and I gave my bottle to my mom and just saved a baggy with some in it :(
but always best to ask the vet.
