Traveling on an Airplane with a Yorkie Has anyone ever taken their Yorkie on an airplane? If so, what size bag did you use, how big is the dog, what airline did you use? Has anyone used a carrier that was as much as 2 or 3 inches over the requirements? I had started looking into taking my little guy Riley (4 months old today and about 6.5 lbs) with me on a plane in a couple of weeks. It would be a 2 1/2 hour flight from New Jersey to Florida. I was looking at JetBlue and Continental and their rules for dogs on planes. I have a carrier for him but it seems it would be too big for either airlines requirements. It is soft-sided and bends but I have a feeling I'd still need to get a new one. However, even looking at something new and smaller, they still all seem to be too big for their size requirements. He doesn't necessarily need to stand the entire trip since it's not a long flight but I'd hate to be turned away at the airport because the carrier is still too big. Everyone's help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!:thumbs up |
2 Attachment(s) We just flew to San Antonio on April 4. It was AA and the bag I used was a Sherpa with no wheels. It was a little too tall according to what I read before we went, but it is soft on top & you can squeeze it under. We were on a little plane (only 3 seats across) & I took him out on my lap both ways-They were fine with it!!! He weighs right at 5 1/2 lbs & they just checked it when we were leaving San Antonio, (they did not measure it, only asked to see it) -that was also the only place they asked for the state health certificate. It did cost 80. each way & he counted as my carry on. |

I work for the airlines. I flew with my guy a couple months ago. Our requirement is if the dog is in the cabin, the carrier must fit underneath the seat in front of you, the carrier also must be soft sided. The bag can be 11" high by 18" long. I purchased the Sherpa bag. Also, most airlines require that you have a vet certificated within 10 days of the flight (and ususally it is valid for 30 days). That may vary by airline. I would talk to your vet also about something that may relax your pup, unless he is naturally relaxed. I used benedryl and Bentley slept the entire flight (which was only over 1hr). Most airlines by regulation do not allow you to remove the dog from its carrier, even if the dog is whining. However, if you have an emptier flight and a good flight crew, they MIGHT let you. FAA regulations however are the pet must remain in the carrier. Check with each airline as their rules may be slightly different. Good luck, its actually fun.. Kathy |
i took one of my babies to LA a couple of months ago. we flew on continental. the hegith requirment for them was nine inches. my carrier was 11. most are. BUT, if the top corners are soft you can smoosh it down. that's what I did. As long as it will fit under the seat that's the main thing. my carrier came from Walmart and even the meduim size was too big for my baby but she was comfy in it. i held her on my lap a lot of the trip. I also unzipped one side of it and put my hand in to pet her and hand feed her some dry kibble which i had carried on in a baggie in the side of the carrier. |
I flew Cali from Atlanta to Los Angeles with me a few weeks ago, and she was fine. She is about 3.5 lbs, and I had the medium sized Juicy carrier. I don't know the dimensions, however, it was a little tall for under the seat. Since it is soft, though, I just sorta smushed down the top. Going there, I took Cali out and let her sit in between me and my daughter. Nobody even knew she was out. Then on the way back, it was a red-eye flight, so she slept in her carrier the entire way. No problems at all. No barking. No crying. I'm sure I'll do it again. Oh yeah, and I did bring food in with me, just hand fed her dry kibble. She was without water for a few hours, but still did fine. |
I have taken my 5.6 lb, tall Yorkie mutt Sig on the plane a couple of times to and from Canada. I have used all 2 different designer bags - one from Target and one from New York Dog. Neither was officially airline approved. Both were soft sided enough to smoosh under the seat in front. Never had a problem. Also - Was told by Continental that the vet certification was only needed if the pet was being transported through baggage and not if in the cabin. Good luck. |
I was told you can only bring one dog. (per person) If you have two dogs, you have to have two carriers, and two carriers are all your allowed to bring on. I was also told you don't need a health certificate unless your going outside the US. I'm confused. I flew from TN. to CA. with Zada when I got her and no one ask for anything. Just paid $80.00 got the tag to put on the carrier and off we went. I even took her out and held her the entire flight. She was only 14 weeks old and I didn't want her traumatized. It was a great trip. |
