I dont treat and think that dogs are better than humans in general. I mean of course I like certain dogs more than certain people. It depends, is the kid throwing tantrums threw out the whole flight? Is the dog barking nonstop? I know if I had a child and someone made any type of remark like that about my kid, implying that a dog is higher than my child I would make sure that they couldnt make that comment or any other comment for a long time. |

Be thankful you can take them on the flight!!! How many animals would be left in wantless situations if owners could never take them with them, what about moving and having to fly there, should we just get rid of them??? As far as comparing them to "real babies" to some people these are the only "babies" they will ever have and they are real, and who can say how they should treat them. I have children and they behave in public, but some do not and it is disturbing and frustrating to say the least for some "rotten" child to be rude and obnoxious and for parents to expect others to just put up with it because they are "real"!!!Maybe they should be thankful that they do not have to pay for them to fly and make them behave in exchange. Maybe they should have to start paying a "fine" for ruining someones expensive dinner or flight.... In all honesty though I do not think it is a comparison as much as an observation. The attendant was in my PO rude, and could use a class on customer service! |

lets show compassion Not everybody likes children...plain and simple...not everybody likes dogs...again plain and simple. We are all entiled to our opinions. Some people feel that children shouldn't be allowed certain places as well as dogs not be allowed certain places. You are not going to change how people feel. I think what we need to learn is to be respectful of what is important to someone else. People who have children...that is their life. They love their children and would do anytihng to keep them safe and happy. I do not have non-furry children but respect that and listen to their stories and how much they love their children with excitement because it is important to them. I would never dream of going up and insulting them and saying "my child OR my furbaby is more important than your child". BUT in reverse, many people make rude comments to those of us who's life revolves around our furbabies. I would be deeply hurt if someone came up to me and said "my baby is more important then your furbaby". I think we need to be considerate. I wouldn't attack them because I would consider them closed minded and a few other things and not worth my energy...but I'm trying to make the point that we all need to be careful of what we say. Now, when I made the comment about children should be kept under control or bad smelling people, I don't consider them "less" then my dog. I'm saying that different things bother different people. A screaming child...well...it is annoying...VERY annoying on a plane...but I understand that it cannot always be helped. My point is...come on...there are so many things that bother different people...how is one yorkie, kept in a bag but put on someones lap so they can comfort them...how is that hurting anyone? Where is the compassion here for that little dog? We are showing compassion for the others on the flight...who may be annoying us...so why can't we show some compassion for this innocent thing stuck in a bag? suzie |

What did your vet give you to use? Was it Acepromazine? Just curious because I take my first flight with my 3 year old yorkie in February.I tried one dose of the sedative at home and it seemed ok. Real glassy eyed.....kind of scarey. I get nervous also. Especially when the airlines say don't give them anything. Thanks Rose ccrose7@aol.com |
I think that it shouldn't be a crime to put the carrier on your lap (or seat next to you) as long as it don't disturb the passengers next to you. As far as having a place in the airport..... I agree there should be a place to go (some airports DO have them). ......... but having a place on the airplane for a pee pad???...... there isn't "changing stations" for babies on most of them, why would they have a place for a pee pad? That would be pushing the issue a bit, and we defintely don't want to do that..... there are too many airlines that do not allow pets on board that way it is! |

Lets say you have a toddler and the (Parent) is not in control of him/her. Why is it the the airline staff are not letting that parent know to control there child. It is not always the Child I get upset with. Parents who think there child screaming and bouncing all over the Plane is fine and the others should too is just wrong. Maybe they need to have a Area just for them;) |

Tomorrow, I will get on a plane to make the return flight home. Last Sunday was the first flight I have taken my yorkies on. They were not sedated & did fine. Bubba barked/whimpered a bit on take off & landing - he has some problems with his ears from time to time - although we were just at the vet for the health certificate & he said his ears were good. I do think his ears were popping or something. Other than that they were perfect angels. I did have them in my lap for a bit under a blanket. I know one flight attendant must have known - she just smiled at me. Praying everything goes as well on the way home. Hope you can make your flight without medication. |

Yes we are having the dog as a carry-on. Yes you pay for it. But, you would be paying for the dog to go in cargo too. There was an airline stewardess that posted not too long ago on here, and THEY are held liable for their passengers. If anyone from the airlines is on board (to include air marshal's) and they see that they are letting passengers get away with things they have to pay the fines, not the customer on the plane. They can even loose their job over it. Is it fair the dog has to stay put under the seat? No, is it fair to that stewardess that she pay fines for me taking the dog out from under the seat? No. But, I also know that when I agree to pay that price to carry my fur-kid on board that I have to follow the rules. I am about to fly back home to the US soon from Japan, and I know I will have to follow the rules. It sucks yes, but, when I pay that price ($160 EACH from Japan to the US) for them to ride in the cabin with me, I know what I am agreeing to. Will I ask the stewardess if I can take mine to the bathroom to stretch their legs. YOU BET. That is a 10 hour flight. I am sure that on the way to the US from Japan will be a bit more lenient as they are avid dogs lovers over here. To me, I am grateful that they don't have to ride in cargo, which the airlines very well could say. What if the FAA made it a rule that no pets could be in cabin, aside from service dogs? Would you stop flying? Would you leave your dog at home? I mean it can be worse. But this is getting off topic~ OP: I agree that it sounds like the stewardess was a rude you know what. I am sorry for that, I don't see why you can't touch your dogs crate. The only thing I can think of is either a) she is not an animal lover or b) there was an airline official on board... hell maybe it was both. Sad truth is, there are a lot of ppl in the world that just plain don't like animals. Is it fair to us? No. Is it fair to the dog? No. Again so sorry for your experience and I am sure a lot of ppl will not like my post... but I guess with my background, I am used to things being by-the-book. P.S. On a side note, cats are also allowed in cabin. Would you want someone taking a cat out of the carrier? What if the person to your left or right, in front or in back of you was allergic? Should you still be allowed to take the cat out? Then it becomes a medical risk. Airlines are just covering their butts. It isn't a dog thing, it is a safety thing. Rules are universal across the board for dogs and cats. |
i realize this iss an old thread that someeone pulled back to the top so I will give my opinion on it.:D No one that flys with a pet should be surprised. The rules and regulations for traveling with pets are plastered all over all the airlines websites. I always check for the rules of any airline I am flying with a few days before I fly. I am flying Northwwest here in a few days and I have almost memorized the rules for traveling with pets. Rules are put in place for a reason. pets have gotten loose from carriers that owners had opened and had to be chased all over the airline. Upset pets have bitten other passengers. |
Well.........I feel sheepish. I didn't even see the date!!! |

And I hope your flight is GREAT!:D |

If it is something like flying with pets I see no reason why it sould not be brought up :) Again;) |
Please forgive me, as I did not see the date. Guess I got a little worked up. :( Didn't mean to be so short. OP~whatever came of the letter you wrote? |
I used to be a Flight Attendant for United Ailrlines. I would fly with my Schnauzer in cargo at that time, when on passes on my free time. Then the pilots said to me that that really wasn't safe. My husband and I fly quite a bit back and forth from Chicago to Florida now. We have a Red Bellied Parrot and our priceless Yorkie "Taylor". We pay $75 for each pet, each way. Taylor does the 2 1/2 hour flight well....and so does Wrigley, our little parrot. I can see that a longer flight could be a problem because any "Travel Day" is LONG! Wrigley, our parrot seems to be the trouble-maker. He waits until we are about 34,000 feet in the air and the flight attendants are doing their beverage service....then he starts his "Cell Phone" ring. The flight attendants are looking around to see WHO didn't turn off their phone...and passengers are all shaking their heads....like IT'S NOT ME!!!!! When they discover that it's our little parrot usually everyone laughs....and then Wrigley let's out with a big laugh too. So far we've been lucky without any big delays. One tip is always make sure that you have a very up to date heath certificate and all paperwork with your baby. |

When i went to pick up Sophia in Chicago i flew back with her on jetblue. I paid $50 beforehand just to be safe but it really wasn't necessary as they did not check at all or seem to care i had a dog. No one even knew i think. Anyway i kept her under the seat for take off and landing but during the flight she was shaking A LOT and i felt bad, even when i tried to give her treats she refused and she even peed in the carrier so i took her out for a little while and put her under a blanket. The stewardess didn't seem to know at all, there was just an annoying lady next to me that kept looking at me like she never saw a dog before, i mean her eyes would pop out her head! lol but she didn't say anything either. It was hard getting Sophie back in the bag, i felt so bad but the ride was quick luckily! |

Try flying Northwest with your dog - they have no clue what they're doing. I took Kalina on Northwest and held her on my lap the entire time we were sitting on the runway (HOURS!!) and no one said a word. I did ask everyone around me if it was OK and they were more than happy with it. The attendants didn't seem to care at all. |
I flew northwest when we got macy and she was out on my lap the whole time too. The flight attendants did not say anything at all. I was happy lol |
I applaud the airline that kicked the family off the plane because they could not control their screamming brat!!!!!!!! There is nothing like being locked up in a plane with kids screaming and crying the whole trip. Its amazing how we have to put our well behaved Yorkies in a crate(although some may not be well behaved!LOL). But I think that is the safest place for them on the plane. |
I flew Delta with Madeleine. On the way there she had her little head poking out of her carrier the entire time and the flight attendants didn't say anything, even though I know they saw her. On the flight back I had her carrier sitting on my lap the entire flight with my hand inside petting her. No one sitting around me had a problem with it or I would not have done it. Also, I did not expect to be able to do this and if it bothered someone or the flight attendant told me I needed to put her back under the seat then I would have. With that said I do think the prices the airlines charge are a bit rediculous. When I flew, the cost it was to have Madeleine fly with me was more than MY ticket!!! |
I've flown Northwest with Piper 5 times now and we've never had any problems. I leave her carrier under the seat until they tell everyone they can "feel free to move about the cabin". I carry a little bottle water-feeder to give her water (kind of like a small lixit) and we don't worry about spills that way. She generally sleeps, but when she wakes up, I do put the carrier on my lap and unzip it so that she can see me and get petted. The flight attendants don't seem to mind at all..and neither have any of my fellow passengers. I didn't know the rule was that they had to stay under the seat..I thought it was basically that they had to stay in the carrier. Sounds like I have been very fortunate on each trip to have had accomodating people around me. :-) |
