Driving to Disney, 17hr trip! Before we head off to Houston for a summer internship, my boyfriend and I are planning on going to Disney World for just 4 days. I am totally obsessed with disney, I've been more than 10 times! But my boyfriend has never been!!! So excited. So we're going to bring Luma and board her at Disney's reccommended kennel. I've checked the website and I think it sounds pretty awesome! It seems more luxurious than the disney resort we'll be staying at! Only question here is how to actually transport her. We are going to be driving. 17 hours of driving, oh boy. Just can't afford to fly. I honestly prefer to hold her in my lap in the passenger seat. I know it's not the safest, but she loves it, and she always falls right to sleep. The longest car ride she's been on is 4hrs and she did great. I know that's not practical to keep her in my lap for 17 hours so I am wondering what to buy to keep her safe and also comfortable. If I could keep her in the front seat, that'd be the best. I don't want to put her in the backseat all alone in a little kennel thing for that long! Any tips at all would be great, we've never driven this long, especially with a yorkie, and I'm pretty nervous about her being scared and sick. |
Can you sit in the back with her? You'll feel like you are in a taxi cab, but at least she can sit on your lap. Better yet, have you considered a doggie car seat? She will be secure and comfortable. |
:DOh, stop by my house and take Tibbe and me with you!:D I don't have any tips for traveling with a dog but enjoy yourselves. The Disney visit sounds wonderful! Take lots of pictures to share with us. :) |

Oh, she would love it. |
Is this your only option, to take her with you? I know you didn't ask but...If it were me, I dont think I would take her. You really should think carefully about what is best for your Luma. Is there a family member or close friend you could trust to take excellent care of her while you are gone? She's just so young and the 17 hr long trip alone is going to be very stressful on her not to mention being put in a strange kennel so far away from home. I would be afraid of something happening to her on the drive there with all of the motion of the vehicle and then the added stress of being away from you and her home. The entirety of the situation is enough to undo all of her potty training and put her in a state of anxiety for a long time. Could even make her afraid of cars. |
Have fun! We are Disney fans and go there every year. Weve never taken the yorkies though |
WHATTT! That sounds like a blast!!! Can Brody, Sophia, and I come?!? Brody says he'd be happy to keep Luma company while you're at the park :kiss2wm: |

I realize bringing her isnt the best option, but it really is the only one. I dont want to burden anyone with her, and I hardly trust my own Boyfriend with her while Im at work! She'll be at a luxury VIP doggy suite with a flatscreen tv, toys from home, a comfy bed, someone to check on her and snuggle, they'll bring her out to potty, and she even gets doggy icecream as a treat, and a complimentary spa day before we pick her up. She wont wanna leave :D She actually loves the car and meeting new people, so I know she'll be okay. |

It does sound like a great place. Be sure that you take "her" food for them to feed her or she will have GI track problems. Have Fun ! |
We just traveled 15+ hours with Jack from Cleveland, Ohio to Palm Coast, Florida - the majority of the time he sat on my lap - I know, not the safest, but that's how we roll. Have a safe trip and enjoy Disney! |
We travel a lot and Cali love it. In addition to her food I always take her water, too. Even though she will sit on your lap it is always a good idea to restrain her with maybe a leash and harness - if something unfortunate happens you do not want her air borne. Have a great time! |
We just traveled 12 hours on Wednesday and my two did great. They travel in their PetGear booster seat together and we stop every two hours. They get water and potty breaks and short walks. I also make sure they eat on their regular schedule and they are happy to sleep and look out the window most the time. When I notice they are getting restless, we stop and take them out. It really is safest that Luma is restrained when you are driving. While you and your boyfriend might be the best drivers in the world, you never know what the person next to you is doing (texting, doing their makeup, talking on the phone), that could cause an accident. For me, it's not worth risking their lives... So they always ride in their seat. Good luck! |
