Flying Delta with Layla Hello All, It has been a while since I have been on YT- very busy teaching but now that I am without a job :( I have more time for YT. I will be flying with Layla from Fort Myers to Detroit in March with Delta. Has anyone had any experience flying with Delta? I booked a first class ticket so she would have more room under the seat and hopefully more leeway with putting her bag on my lap during the flight. I am open to ANY and all suggestions. I am beyond nervous and it is over a month away! |
Well, first of all...you're flying the wrong way  Having two kids in college I know that March is SPRING BREAK time, so you're supposed to be flying from Detroit TO Fort Myers! :D:D:D I've flown Delta to and from Detroit with a yorkie ALOT and they've always been great. Never had any issue to do with the dog, just sometimes issues with flight delays which resulted in missed connecting flights. |
We recently flew Delta in coach and there was plenty of room for Gracie's carrier under the middle seat (at my feet). As with other airlines, she had to stay in her carrier, and the flight attendants nicely made sure I knew that. It was an uneventful flight. Good luck :) I'm sure things will go fine. |

I fly Delta from Sarasota, FL to Grand Rapids via Detroit frequently. Never any issues. They do expect her to remain inside of her carrier at all times but I am able to put her Kwigy Bo on my lap during the flight. Consider bringing a child's medicine syringe to squirt water into her mouth through the mesh in her carrier. I came up with this trick after our first flight a few years ago~ This has been a life saver for us  |

disposable pee pads for the plane and airport bathroom (I use the family/handicapped bathroom because they are to remain in the carrier in the airport as well.) I hide a treat at the bottom of her carrier to "find" mid flight. if she gets upset usually giving her my bare foot through the mesh (if she is under the seat for take off or landing) helps to calm her when I have to use the bathroom I hang her up in her carrier on the purse hook :D:D |

Try not to feed her or give her water before the flight so it is less likely she will have to pee or poop. When I get to the airport after checking in, I always give her Jamie one last walk. Line the bottom of the bag with pee pads just in case she can't keep it in. This has only happened once to my dog during dozens of flights. Most flight attendants are great about dogs and will bend the rules, but sometimes you encounter a rule person, even in first class, that will not let you keep the bag on your lap at all. I love the idea about the syringe, I just give her an ice cube to lick mid-flight and some treats. Most of the time, Jamie is fine on the plane especially after the plane takes off since the movement puts them to sleep. Don't worry, it will likely be very uneventful for you and the pup. Have a great flight |

Let her potty before checking in for the flight and as soon as you get to baggage claim in Detroit. Sugar has a hard time peeing in cold weather. Her pee pee freezes up :D:D |
