Whenever we're in the car,has your dog ever done this ?
 
Our older dog Zoey (female) likes to ride on my shoulders when I am driving, and basically whenever we are driving around town or basically anywhere, whenever she see's another dog especially ! She starts to get all tense growls and starts barking like mad, she almost like attacks the other dog from the confines of our car, It has become embarrasing and my wife is upset and has begun to complain why is she doing this? She has also started to growl at little Kids, Old people. and she starts to bark almost like she is going to attack. Now Zoey is not an aggressive dog and when outside of the car never ever would act like this towards other animals or people, She is very loving. But the car thing is becoming a bit much. Has anyone else ever experianced this sort of behavior :mad:

I recommend putting her in a car seat, a Snoozer or PetGear booster, for safety and probable behavior control. Correct her verbally whenever she growls or barks at triggers.

Yikes! Isn't this more than a little dangerous to your dog and your driving ability? Why isn't she secured for her own safety and so that she's not a distraction to your driving, or a lose projectile in the event of an accident?

I have 4 Yorkies and they NEVER ride in the car unless they are in a car seat. I also quit letting them ride in the front seat, because of the air bag could smother them even if they were in a car seat. Of course I learned about car seats from friends at YT.

Worse, the force of the air bag deploying can break the dog's neck.

I never really thought of this, but you're right. Plus, I didn't know it could smother them. I will start putting mine in the back seat. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

behavior in the Car
 
I have never really worried about either of my dogs being unsafe while riding in the car with me. The aggressiveness is what has been the problem. I am looking for suggestions about changing this kind of behavior

Mine do not ride in my car unless they are harnessed into the backseat with their special seatbelts or secured in a pet carrier that is seatbelted in- preferably the latter. So I don't know how they would react if they were out, they would probably bark at everything that went by as they do when leashed and walking.

Car seats often change all kinds of behavior. Snoozers are known for calming down Yorkies in the car.

My dogs usually just take a nap in their car seats when we are riding.

Totally agree with above.

An unrestrained 10-pound dog in a crash at 50 mph will exert roughly 500 pounds of pressure, while an unrestrained 80-pound dog in a crash at only 30 mph will exert 2,400 pounds of pressure. And they will almost certainly die. I was in a bad car accident with Jackson last year (my car was totaled) and it happened soooo fast -- had he been sitting on my lap, the air bag would have certainly killed him in an instant. If you feel it's worth the risk, go for it. But realize how many accidents are caused every year by dogs in laps and you could injure others, yourself or your dog.

A car seat will likely help with behavioral problems as well. If they are strapped in, they will not be able to lash out so easily.

For some reason she thinks she has to protect you and the car. Your putting her life at risk not having her in a pet seat or you could even buy one of these..........Pet Auto Safety Restraint Strap - black This is what I have finally started useing for my girls. Takes up a lot less room. ;)

If Harry's not in his crate in the back - then this is also what we use, attached to his harness and clicked into the seat belt slot. So much safer for you all. Sally + Harry x
