Road Trip My turn, finally. I will be driving from Texas to Florida in September and I will be taking Buster & Maggie. I'm going to drive straight through, only stopping for gas and let them out to potty, walk around and stretch their legs. Has anyone used one of the hammocks for the back seat? It keeps them from getting/falling on the floor and from getting into the front seat. I have two car seats but I don't want them to have to stay in those for the whole trip. I was thinking of getting one and putting them back there for short trips to see how they would acted. Or any other ideas? |
I have always said if I went on a long car trip with the kiddos again I would get one of these: Pet Carrier they also have a single version if you think that is too big. I like mine to be fully contained in the car I think it is safest, prevents them from getting thrown from the vehicle in an accident and also makes it easiest for emergency personnel to transport them should an accident occur where you were not able to help. These provide that while still giving them all the room to move around. |

OK, so the Pop Up is not a good item if you have a Ford Explorer. I purchased it and when the seat belts are latched, the carrier butts up against the back of the front seats. It is not safely secured. It's the way the seat belt latches are made on the Explorer. It would work in my small car but I'm not taking the small car. Plan B! But I don't know what it is. |
"Or any other ideas?" We use the Fido Rido dog car seat, made right here in the USA. It's fairly tall, but since I've added a couple cushions under it, Graysee can get her paws up on the edge and get her head out the window (I added some foam padding around the edge, so she is not standing on hard plastic!). It is large enough for her to sprawl out, and it has a nice cushion and a faux sheepskin cover. Look it up online, at: FidoRidoŽ Dog Car Seat Booster Look-Out? and Restraint System - Travel Bed for Pets - Dog Travel Carrier and Bath Graysee loves it!!! It comes with a harness, which will keep the pooch in place in case of emergency stops or fender-benders. It's been a great investment, for us! I recently took my Graysee on a round trip from the Houston, TX area to Tucson, AZ. We stopped for the night on both legs of the trip in Fort Stockton, TX. Graysee stayed content in her seat the whole way, BOTH ways!! :aimeeyork  |
We use the popular Snoozer dog car seat. It is one that many YT'ers have. I actually have 2 of them (3 dogs). They keep the dog secure, they sit up high so they can see out and enjoy the trip, and they look very nice! You can also use them as a bed once you get to your destination if you want to ..... One of the best purchases I have made for my dogs. |
My belief is that they are much safer in my Snoozer car seats. I have two dogs, both have their own car seat. We have gone on several camping trips, sometimes eight plus hours in the seats. They know the routine, we make stops, go potty, stretch our legs and do just fine. I feel safer knowing that they are restrained in case of an accident. Both pups love their seats as well. |
