Is the Rabies Shot Required for Flying? My new puppy, Rylie, is coming home on November 11th, but we are flying to go pick her up and we are bringing her back home in the cabin. Now I know a health certificate is required by the FAA, but I have a question regarding vaccines, specifically the rabies shot. My little girl will not be 16 weeks (she will be only 12 or 13). 16 weeks is when the rabies shot is usually given, but will the airline allow her on without it??? I'm hesitant to have it done early because I know small dogs can have terrible reactions to too many vaccines (especially rabies) and the rabies shot specifically should be given 4 weeks after the last round (e.g. vaccines at 12 weeks and the rabies at 16 weeks). Please help! |
Most airlines require a health certificate from the vet, but aren't specific about vaccination requirements. What is required for the heath certificate is generally determined by state law (where puppy is being shipped from). Each state has their own rabies law. You will have to abide by the laws of your state. Most don't require a rabies vaccine vaccine before 4 months, but there are a few that require it at three months, I believe. You can check your state's rabies law here: http://vaccines.dogsadversereactions...RabiesLaws.pdf This is a good article about flying with a pet. It has links to the various airlines with specific requirements. Article: Shipping Your Pet |

I do not think they will require a puppy to have the shot before it is due. Also... it depends on the airline.. I just flew with Southwest and was not required to have a health certificate. American says you need one.. yet I was never asked for it. |
Puppies aren't required to have any shot which isn't age appropriate and that notation is made on their health certificate. |
That .pdf is extremely useful! I saved a copy for the future if needed. I will double check that those laws still apply though as legal matters are subject to change. Again, thank you so much. :) |
Thank you all so much! This is very helpful. I am flying Southwest. I will call them to make sure that this is their policy later today. I didn't think they could force a vaccine for a pup too young, but I wasn't sure. The law is often not practical. |
I just got through to the airline, after waiting on the phone forever... hence this thread (well that combined with the fact I thought it might be useful to have a notation of it up here for others who might be seeking the information). Southwest Airlines does NOT, at this time, require puppies to have the rabies shot if they under the normal scheduled time for the rabies vaccine (16 weeks). I thought I would keep the forum updated. I hope this is informative to someone else! Thank you all again for your help. It is hard remembering to research all this stuff and understanding it all. Just when I think I'm done, something else pops up! Thank you for being so awesome YT <3 |
