For Those That Travel Frequently With Their Yorkies; Advice Needed (: Khloe is now 3 months old, and is 99% housebroken at home. However, we visit the mountains every other weekend, and one weekend out of a month we go to Atlanta to organize charity events. When she is out of her element, she has a lot of accidents, even though her daily routine is consistent where ever we go. Additionally, she never whines when she is put to bed in her crate at home. But when we are out of town, she whines when being put in her crate. I try to keep as many factors the same as I can for her, such as her feeding times, her bed time, the lighting around her crate, the background noise, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions to make this easier? I'm sure this is normal, but how long should it take for her to adapt to new surroundings? I understand that she is just a puppy, and we are patient with her, I'm just curious if there is anything that we can do to make the situation easier for everyone. Thanks so much, and I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend! |
Levi goes everywhere with me, and we travel/visit friends and relatives a lot. He has stayed overnight at my undergrad apartment, my parents' house, my brother's apartment, my summer house, my boyfriend's apartment, my boyfriend's parents' house, my aunt's house...so he is pretty used to moving around! I think you are doing the most important thing: keeping Khloe's schedule consistent. The two major problems I've had are accidents in others' houses, and picky eating. If I mix a bit of wet food into his regular kibble, he will eat no matter where we are. For the potty - I take him out much more frequently than I would at our regular home, I watch him like a hawk, and I use belly bands occasionally. I don't know about nighttime whining, as Levi sleeps with me and is content as long as I am with him. I think that keeping the atmosphere around Khloe's crate as close to her home environment as possible is a great idea. It will probably just take Khloe time to get used to traveling frequently. Levi doesn't have a skittish personality at all - he is very curious and outgoing - but he occasionally does feel out of his element, so I try to pay him special attention if we are in a new place. He LOVES going to places he is now familiar with...so I'm sure once Khloe gets used to traveling, she will enjoy it! I know Levi whines like crazy once we turn onto my aunt's driveway, he can't wait to get out of the car to visit and play! :) |

She usually is very outgoing, but occasionally I think she gets sensory overload because we go from the flatlands (our home) to the mountains, and from the mountains to the city of Atlanta. So I guess it is much for a little pup to take in. I'm hoping that when we get her playmate in November, it will be easier on them (even though I know it will be a little more work and packing on my behalf). I hope you are having a great weekend. We are expecting isolated showers up here in the mountains, and have a family reunion to go to as well before going back home for another week. Take care, and enjoy what is left of the weekend! :D |
We are at my mom's house, which is about an hour or so from Boone, and we've it's been raining off and on all day. Hope it doesn't rain too much on you! Levi's been from pretty big places (DC) to my tiny little hometown, and he's definitely gotten used to the changes. :) He's pretty used to traveling, and handles it pretty well. He's a little older (2.5 years). I'm sure Khloe LOVES that she gets to go with you guys everywhere! And I'm sure that once she is used to it, she will be totally jaded by all the traveling in no time. |

Haha, I took the SAT at Ashe County HS. I'm pretty sure that's in West Jefferson? Everywhere around my mom's house was full the weekend I needed to take it. Of course that was a whole 8 years ago. :) |
