Feeding Yorkies
 

Hi there every one I was just wondering what different yorkie owners fed there yorkies:confused: I find my Yorky rather difficult to feed at times, I guess I have spoilt him, as my daughter said to me I would put a plate full of dinner down for him and he wouldn't touch tht one so I would say to him never mind mummy will give you something differen, sometimes he ends up with three different dinners, and at that stage he will choose what he wants.

He is not sick either he is just picky.

I feed mine California Natural kibble and canned. Unfortunately, mine aren't picky at all and need to go on diets.

A Yorkie will get picky because it has too much variety to choose from and learns to stick his/her nose up to things because the learned behaviour is that he/she will get something else. This can be a very dangerous behaviour. Unfortunately this is extremely hard to break a Yorkie from this habit. If it has gone on for a long time a Yorkie will make you think he will die from not eating...he shouldn't. When he gets hungry enough he will eat. If he doesn't...get to a vet to get some appetite meds. You could try giving him something that is does like at this moment...mix with a bit of Beechnut babyfood (chicken or beef) when he decides to hate the kibble then wean the dog back to kibble. He will scare you
with not eating but DO NOT offer something different.


Often times it can be an indication of tummy issues or a Yorkie who is not feeling 100% for any number of reasons including bad teeth,teeth crowding or retained teeth. If a Yorkie is not eating there is normally a reason...whether it be learned or not. Try to investigate many possibilities.

Do not feed a food over 26% protein though...most Yorkies cannot process the extra.

Thank you, yes we think the world of our little Yorkie, it is the only dog we have owned, and we have socialised him a lot and it is amazing how many people that stop us in the shopping centre and want to speak to Yorkie, we don't have a lot of yorkies in New Zealand.
