Height limits of carrier in flights.. I was checking online and found that the height of cabin carrier should be about 8.5" . Wow isnt that small ? I thought my 1 yr old yorkie is tiny and he is about 10 inches in height.. How can he even fit in even though he weights only about 4.5 lbs ? Window Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H Middle Seat: 19"L x 19"W x 8.25"H Aisle Seat: 19"L x 14"W x 8.25"H |
If your Yorkie is only 4.5lbs it'll have no problem fitting in one of those small plastic kennel like carriers. Check out a walmart or target, they have them for much cheaper than the pet stores and if yo u don't like it u can return it. They have soft carriers that the airlines allow as well. I think your Yorkie will spend the bulk of his time laying down. My dog was on an international flight and he weighed about 7.5lbs. The problem is not sz but weight. On international flights from Asia to the US the dog plus the carrier can not exceed 10lbs to be placed on a play, anything larger has to go in cargo. If you're taking your dog to an island state or country like Japan they require ur dog b quarantined and examined at the airport. So u need to check out the laws governing ur destination. Hope that helps. |
Different airlines have different size restrictions on under seat carriers, as well as other specifications about ventilation and openings (can't use a pet purse, etc). I have used the Sherpa small carrier many times on Hawaiian Airlines, and their posted size limit is 16x10x9.5. A 4.5 lb dog easily fits in the small carrier, which is rated up to an 8 lb dog. |
Thanks for replies folks... SWA airlines on their website says ...check the bold letters.... i am scared of soft carriers as my yorkie might just chew it off..thinking of a hard one..any reccomendations? What types of pet carriers can Customers bring? Customers may bring a soft or hard-sided pet carrier that is leak proof and well ventilated. The pet carrier must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of the Customer and be stowed in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The dog or cat must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier with ease. |
4.5lb Yorkie Your dog will have no problem. It will go in ducking it's head, then turn around and look at you or lie down. But like I said, buy one and test it. I just used the generic plastic one and put a sherpa bed lining on the bottom and a wee pad underneath that....just in case.:) |
Sherpa makes specific "soft" carriers that are airline approved. They are not all that soft....they are quite sturdy and very well made. The nice thing about the soft carriers is that they are a bit flexible when putting under the seat. A hard plastic one has no room for error.... it either will fit or it won't, and if it doesn't you are bumped. Do an online search to get a complete education about carriers and get a better idea. |
Great thing about SWA is they DO NOT need any health , vaccination report for the dog itself and there is no charge for first 2 checkins.. |

I own and have used the SWA carrier and your baby should do fine in it. It is made very well and I wouldn't worry about the chewing it up :D It's also wide so your baby can spread out and take a nice nap. When you are carrying it with your baby in in it stretches a little to give it more height. It fits perfectly under SWA seats but I wouldn't recommend you sitting in the isle seat because they are more narrow underneath.. |

 They charge for one way. If you have to change planes of course there is no charge. Be careful because in Dallas they actually asked to see Cerise ticket before they would let me on the plane with her and I had just transfered from one gate to another. |

1) would you recommend the middle side which seams wider? 2) what size sherpa carrier did you get ? Thanks |
Just wanted to add that SturdiBags are also awesome for airline travel... the top is very flexible in order to fit under the seat withing collapsing in too much on the dog! |
