Questions: Travel Carrier I have numerous of question that I hope ya'll can help me with. I am thinking of traveling and including my Yorkie. 1. One of the airlines told me that I need to get a soft carrier for my dog. What do ya'll have~? 2. One airlines told me that the carrier needs to go under the seat and the other airlines told me that it needs to go under the seat in front. Which is a good choice for the dog? 3. Do I need to provide a water and/or food dish while he is in the carrier? 4. I know I need to get a carrier that he can move around in. I found different sizes tonight: a. One with rollers size Medium (up to 16 lb); b. One that fits up to 8 lbs; c. One that fits up to 14 lbs. He's at the most 7.8 lbs, but I don't know which one to get. Which should I consider? 5. I found the carriers at Petsmart. Is this a good place to get one or is there other places I should consider that I found on the web? 6. Is there anywhere at the airport that I can take him out to potty and get fresh air? 7. Is taking your dog out of the carrier allowable at the airport? Thanks :) |
depending on how long the flight is and if you have layover....i wouldn't provide food or water during the flight because most airlines require them to stay in the carrier under the seat in front of you. i flew once with Ting Ting to Chicago and back and i used my KwigyBo Alex Luxe Carrier...it is a softside carrier. I took Ting Ting out of her carrier in the airport when we were waiting to board the plane...my layover was too short to take her out...but i unzipped it to let her poke her head out of the bag. |
you could try either petsmart or petco one of them is now selling american airline brand carriers. or i believe Sherpa brand carriers are airline approved! Hope this helps:) Have a fun and safe trip!! |
I bought one from e-bay for travel....I wanted one that was light weight (so many carriers are so heavy and why do I want one that weighs more than my 3 lb. dog!!) and I wanted one that could squish down. This kind worked great!! I bought one in pink plaid but it was like this. They come in S, M & L. I've never traveled with a dog on a plane before, but I have traveled a lot. If you can get something functional and comfortable with wheels, I don't think you will be sorry. I wondered also how you potty a dog when you are traveling. Sometimes the layover between flights is a rush...so when and where...hmmmm.... Perhaps potty pads in the crate??? I'm curious. Hope you get back to us about what you did and how it goes! |
I use potty pads in the family restroom--I lay one on the floor, let her do her thing, get a drink, wipe paws and we're ready to roll! |
I put a potty pad in the carrier too. |
I always swore by petflys bags but I recently bought a sturdibag and I am in LOVE... it is sooo lightweight, lots of room for the dogs, and has a great strap for carrying it on my shoulder... most sizes are airline approved and they can bend to fit under a seat without totally falling in on themselves like a lot of carriers. They get a big  from me. |
The sturdibag looks very nice. Might have to check one out. |
I have frequently flown with my Sissy and also courrier puppies, so I have flown into many airports with various sized yorkies. A soft carrier is recommended if you are not always going to fly with the same airline as the height under a seat is not consistent between airlines. Also not consistent within an airline if using their "connect" regional carriers (these are usually smaller planes with less space under the seat). The tallest under seat space I am aware of is 11". The carrier must be under the seat in front of you on all airlines. I would not recommend food or drink in the carrier. You can always give water if need be during the flight. Many will not eat or drink while in transit. Potty pads in a restroom stall is a great way to go as most airports have only cconcrete surrounding with lots of noise. Most pups will hold it until you get where you are going. Keep in mind that all airlines charge for carrying on a pet - there is a charge both ways. You may not be allowed to take the carrier out from under the seat during the flight.... Some airports will let you have the dog out of the carrier while in the airport, others do not. Most will not allow a dog on a leash walking through an airport. Some airlines require a recent health certificate for your pet - many do not. It is a good idea to at least have proof of your rabies vaccine with you. Also a good idea to have your pet micro-chipped as well as having ID on the dog while traveling. A leash is also a good thing to have with you. Please let me know if you have any other questions I may not have addressed........ |
Since I mostly fly Southwest and they now allow small pets, I bought their carrier. That way They can't give me any grief about it. Cerise and I flew from Birmingham (when I picked her up) and I put a potty pad in it and a baby toy/blanket. I also placed a warm extra scarf I had with me, because I had held her for over two hours and under that seat she looked nervous peeking through the carrier screen. She curled up on it and went to sleep. I didn't give her any food or water. |
The best thing to do is put a potty pad in the carrier 'just in case' but in the middle of the flight or whatever take your dog to the bathroom in the airplane to go potty. I also would give something little to eat before the flight-not too much or they can get nauseous. Also take a little blankie or sweater cause sometimes it gets cold on the flight. I was just on a flight back to ny and this lady in front of me had her dog. They let her take her dog out for a little bit for her to hold. I don't think they are so strict on carrier size-it just has to fit under the seat. |
