Flying with a yorkie! Ok, so I'm going to get on a plane and I have bought the in cabin bag and I'm all set except I'm not sure what to give him so he will stay calm. My vet told me to try benadryl at home to see how he would do, but besides making him a little sleepy, the barking at things and the hyper personality did not subside. The next step would be a tranquilizer, has anyone ever used one before? How long does it last. The flight is only 3 hours. So worried he will start barking like a maniac on the plane and people are going to be giving me the evil eye.:animal36 |
PLEASE do not give a tranquilizer!! Some airlines even have on their website that this is dangerous - I can't remember why now, but something about their breathing. My vet confirmed it shouldn't be done. I was so worried too when I was taking Pixel to Texas from Florida! I definitely didn't want anyone upset with me for having an annoying little yapper LOL I even told the person next to me how worried I was and I kept looking in his bag checking on him and he would be chewing his new toy (made sure to save it for the trip) and finally the guy next to me said "I think he's doing better than you are" LOL Soon after he went to sleep. On the way back I settled down a lot and he slept the whole entire way. I think the noise from the plane and the rumble of the floor knocks them out :D He's been to Texas twice now and we are going back in April again (I have friends out there) and I'm no longer worried (okay, still better knock on wood don't wanna jinx it lol) ;) Good luck and have fun! |
Oh another tip, I started putting Pixel in his bag and taking him to Walgreens and stuff a month or so beforehand, so he would get used to his flight bag. :) |

I have to pick up my baby Cerise next month and I'm nervous too. That comment made me laugh so hard and it's right on. Being a parent of a furbaby or skin baby we get nervous over simple stuff. I believe you are right about the vibration and noise from the plane knocking him out...just like a baby! :) |
I have done all of this, I take him in the bag all the time, he barks and growls at every person he sees. When we take car trips I put him in the bag to get used to it he pants and whines the entire time, so far the longest has been 1 1/2 hours. I know if I was sitting next to a whining dog on a plane I would be annoyed, so how can I do that to other people. The vet assured me it would be a low dose, but I don't know what else to give him. I know my dog, he won't behave, he is fun to be with at home, but not out on the road. |
Pixel would cry if he was in his bag on road trips too, but the plane makes him calm - I think because of the noise and rumble like I said earlier. But you know your baby best, so if your vet says it's a low dose and is okay, I guess that's what you should do :) |
By the way, if you want to try and make car trips better, you may want to get the lookout carseat. Pixel HATED the car and it was always stressful bringing him anywhere and now he practically BEGS to go with me when I'm going for a car ride - he just loves it! :) |
Noises is what he barks at the most, right now he is barking because my washing machine is on, you would think he would be used to it by now. LOL. He's a piece of work. |
I have the car seat, he does like it better, but only if he is sitting next to me, if I'm with my hubby and I put him in the back he also whines. I was just using the bag to get him used to it. |
I would cut back on food and water a few hours before the flight--if your little one starts panting, hold an ice cube in the bag so he can lick it during the flight. that would be my only suggesting. A 3 hr. flight is really not that big a deal. have fun! |
my memo is 4 year old we are going in long flight from europe to usa first flight is almost 10 hours ....then another 4 hours is not dengerous for him ? |

I've done 14 hours with 2 of them in a travel bag under the seat. They do fine. About half way through the trip take them to the bathroom and put down a potty pad, and give them a bit of nutracal. I also give them a new chew toy in the bag on the trip. |
