Always really car sick--HELP! I have read the threads about car sickness, taken the kind advice of all of you, but nothing works. Frankie vomits every time when he rides in the car. Today I counted 9. I don't want to be cruel to him nor do I think this is particularly healthy as I always become concerned about dehydration. I make sure he eats and drinks as soon as we get him home. But... when is enough enough? I am concerned if I limit his car rides to necessay trips to the vet and boarding, he will come to associate the car as bad. He likes getting to his destinations now, but the ride is just awful. He has no mental block about going. He always wants to go. Frankie is six months old. Will he grow out of this ever? I have to take 3 tea towels and 3 bath towels every time. He ends up a mess. I think I am just being cruel putting him through this. Trust me I have tried everything but drugs. What should I do? |
First, where does Frankie sit in your car while you're driving? He should always be seated in the rear of your car. Always restrained in a car seat harness and always sitting in a secured booster car seat. If you can place the seat in the center of your back seat that should be the best location for the least amount of jiggling while driving. The fact that these booster seats (see link below) allow your pet to sit high up enough off of the seat and the foam is so dense...makes for a more stabilized drive as well. Plus, they can actually see out the passenger window so...my dogs love to see what's going on out there, too! The seat covers come in a variety of colors & fabric types and they wash up beautifully, too. Also, it helps to not feed your dog prior to travel time...just in case. Car sick Sorry to hear that your baby gets car sick. My baby vomited when I bought him home but it has not happened again. I don't feed him when we travel and I have my daugher hold him still when traveling. Don't know how helpful this is but, good luck. Just keep trying, he/she will get use to it. |
Yogi suffered with car sickness too. What I did was move his car seat to the front passenger seat. It sits up high enough that he can see out the window. I roll the window down enough so that fresh air is coming in on him. It seemed that the combo of the air moving and being in the front helped him. Also, we only did short, just a block or two, rides to the park and then got out for a long walk. Then the short block or two ride home. I think he was probably 9 or 10 months old before he over came the car sickness. He can ride in the back now with the other two, but if at all possible, I try to have his window down just a little so that he get fresh air. |
I have a barfer too. I put him in his little carrier which I have learned is the wrong thing to do. I have a couple of car seats for them but will probably have to buy a real small one for Dudley because he is so little. Fed him the last time before going to the vet, wrong thing to do. He barfed up all the way home. Lesson will learned. I am going to get him a little bitty car seat and try that. Hope yours gets better. I hate for them to get sick like that. Poor babies. |
Sophie gets sick sometimes, too. I have read that you can give them a bit of dramamine to help, but I don't want to do that unless I have to. Also, keeping the window down next to them will help, too. Sophie also has the snoozer II carseat and she loves it. Goes to sleep the minute she's in it so that has helped with her carsickness, too. I'm just slowly trying to condition her to get better on riding in the car. Sometimes, I've heard, they do grow out of it. |
I feel for you Finnigan grew out of his car sickness. Sadly, Gwenndilyn has not. The new thing the vet has us trying is to give her 1/2 tablet of Cerena (prescription for nausea) 2 hours before travel and to withhold food during that period. Before we went the prescription route we tried getting her accustomed to the vehicle, sitting in it while it was off.... she would start drooling heavily as soon as we got in the vehicle. We tried slowly increasing the length of the trip, but it just seemed anytime in the vehicle made her sick. She would even get sick from being carried around in her bag at first! I won't give her Benadryl as I don't want to just knock her out. If we go somewhere first thing in the morning before she has a chance to eat it seems we don't even have to give her the anti-nausea med. Depending on the age/weight of your pup that may not be the best idea for you if hypoglycemia is a concern. I haven't tried a high sitting seat yet, so maybe that will be the next thing we try. So far we've had the best luck with driving in the mornings with an empty tummy! Keep me updated with how he does! Good luck! |
Didn't get the car seat...but, the last two times in the car were vomit free. He's seven months--maybe he is growing out of it. |
maggie is 16 mos old and I think that she is finally outgrowing hers carsickness. Hot Rod had a couple of episodes when he was a baby. I find that f you set them high in the seat it helps. In humans, the eye and brain need to coordinate so I imagine that is the same for dogs. Once I got the snoozer seat, Hot Rod was fine. Maggie has learned to look out the window and since she's been doing this she hasn't gotten sick. I have the snoozer car seat and they love it. I have it in the front seat. sometimes I will blow the a/c on high and point it at them so they won't get too hot and throw up. Good luck. |
