Road trip with Yorkie Has anyone driven a far distance with their baby? I will be doing this for the first time in about a week or so with Lucas. I live in Calgary, AB and am driving to Kelowna, BC for the summer with my family. It is about a 7 hour drive and I'm wondering how I should handle this. I know we will be having lots of breaks, just not sure how often? How should I make the car environment comfortable for him? Would it be easier to fly? Or is this less of a big deal than I am making it?:confused: Thanks |
Well, it depends on your dog. In my case, my dog LOVES the car. When I open the door he hops right in and lays down on the floor. Eventually I give in and let him up on my lap. I just don't want him to have bad manners haha, so he goes up when I want him up. Once we were about to leave but I had to run in to get something and he wouldn't get out of the car. I left the door to my house open just in case he wanted to follow, but he just stayed there. I come back and he is in the same position like,"can we go now??" It was too cute. Don't worry he stays in our yard in case he did jump out. Anyways so, if he is used to the car it should be fine. Just take breaks ever 2 hours or so. That way he can go to the bathroom and drink. If he is used to traveling in a crate then just do whatever he is used to. I wouldn't worry too much. We're driving to Oregon which I think is a 7 hour+ drive and I'm not worried at all. My little guy is going to love it! |
I highly recommend a car seat if you don't already have one. The Snoozer brand (or Pet Gear) is very comfortable and high enough where they can see out the window if they want to. My girls love car rides once we get going. We've done a few major road trips with the girls. The first was from Michigan to Myrtle Beach (about 14 hours each way), the second was from Michigan to Kansas City (about 13 hours each way), and this year we will go from Michigan to Alexandria (about 11 hours each way, through we will stop in Cleveland). We didn't really stop any more frequently than we would have for me to go to the bathroom. We primarily used rest areas so the girls could roam on their leashes. We packed tons of food and water for snacking along the way, treats for the girls and chew sticks as well. They slept a good part of the trip and were very good for each and every one. Hope you have a great trip!!!! |
I have 2 yorkies and we recently took a road trip to OK, we live in CA. It was about 1800 miles one way. My babies did fine. I always kept a leash on them, offered lots of water and stopped every couple of hours to potty. It really was no big deal, they slept most of the time. Have a great trip! |
road trip We travel with our yorkie. We will be leaving Texas this weekend and traveling to Florida. I usually take max's favorite blankie and his kids chair he sleeps in. I also take the carrier that looks like a purse. He gets all his goodies, chewies etc. and does real well. We do potty breaks when getting food or gas and monitor his water. |
We drove out to Washington state when we moved here from Michigan with Penny and her two feline "brothers". They all handled it much better than I thought they would-- Penny was a little trooper! She even got out in the middle of a blizzard in the Rockies to potty. =P I'd just recommend stopping pretty frequently. We took breaks every 2-3 hours. I actually inputted the locations of rest areas along our route into my GPS so that we could know in advance how far it would be between them and therefore not force Penny to "hold it" longer than she ought to. We used a car harness for her-- a special belt that attached to the seat belt and then hooked to her harness. If your dog ever suffers from motion sickness in the car (about 1/5 of dogs do!) you might want to look into getting some Cerenia tablets before you go. Penny had always had issues with motion sickness on long car rides, but now we've got meds available to prevent that. |
chester and I just had a road trip of 3400 miles that we went on last year, I stop frequently for potty and regualr breaks, we dont drive must over 3-400 miles a day, especially if it is warm out. I take his regular stuff, toys, treats and I never use water from a motel, it can make them sick, bottled only. We have another planned this september again. I stay at motel 6 most of the time, they dont charge for pets. |
We just moved to TX from OH. Our 6 month yorkie did GREAT. We kept him in a pop-up car carrier that we bought from target and stopped every 2-4 hours. Whenever we got out of the car we would take him for a little walk. We put chew toys and small bones in his carrier to keep him entertained. Those small bones from Dingo are AMAZING. Each time we stopped we would give him water. Please remember that if you stop somewhere you can't take your Yorkie in, crack the windows and park in the shade or put up a window shade if you can. A hot car can be very dangerous very quickly! I would definitely start getting him used to the car and his carrier before hand. Start with short rides to places like parks and dog runs so he can associate the car ride with good experiences. Hope this helped anyone going on a long road trip! |
Thanks everyone! We are leaving in about a half hour and all your suggestions were/are being put to use :) Hopfully he is feeling sleepy today :p |
I'd driven from Calgary to Kelowna with my Yorkie + Doberman and they both did great. We breaked every couple of hours, to let them stretch and have a pee. Have fun, the Okanogan is one of my favourite places, I grew up there and miss it everyday. Drive safe! |
It will be fine.. I recently drove to MI with family July 4th weekend. That's a 7 hour drive also. Libbie was great in the car. I had her in my lap the whole time. . . I thought being in a crate for such a long time might get her scared. She just feel asleep and looked out the window the whole time. |
traveling I have 6 furbabies and all of mine travel real well. I do not live close to my family members so we're on the road every month. I have a car seat up front and a dog hammock for the back. In the back I put pillows on the hammock and take off. I use pampers on my babies since I travel by my self with them stopping is out of the question. Our longest trip is only 4 hrs. so the pampers work great for us. When we stop for red lights we get lots of laughs from surrounding vehicles cause my guys get hyper when I stop. :aimeeyork |

I haven't traveled with my new baby yet - but my previous Yorkie was such a well-seasoned traveler and camper. He even went on a 9-day camping vacation - camping somewhere different every other day and lots of driving in between. They are lilttle troopers - and they would always much rather be by our sides when possible than left behind. And looking out the window is always fun! |
