Yorkie from Japan A very close friend, who is Japanese and living in the US, has been offered a Yorkie puppy that was abandoned. But the puppy is with her Aunt in Japan and when my friend goes home for a visit in August she wants to bring the puppy back with her. I understand that as long as the Japanese yorkie has its shots up to date, there will be no quarantine period. But I am concerned about the fact that the journey, door to door, from Japan to Florida takes 20 hours. My question is, how will she keep the puppy on a plane for so many hours? Even crated and in the cabin with her, the poor little thing will need to relieve itself, eat and run around. Has anyone done this? Any advice for a newbie yorkie traveler? |

It can be done. She can either line the bottom of the crate with pee pads, and/or take the pup to the bathroom a handful of times and put the pee pad on the floor for the pup to go potty. ;) |

I got my dog in KOrea and I've flown to the US, then back to Korea with her. It is DEFINITELY doable. The important thing is that you get a health certificate for the dog before you get on the plane. In Korea you also need to get a "checkup" at the airport before leaving the country. I'm not sure how it works in Japan, but I'm sure you can do some googling and find some good information. As far as getting the dog into the US, all that is mandatory is the rabies vaccination. What state are you flying into? Research that state's import laws to make sure that nothing else is required. You'll find that the bathroom is your saving grace on the plane. Bring along pee pads and use the bathroom with a baby changing table. You can also take your dog out for hugs and comfort in case the flight attendants won't let you take him/her out on the plane (it's illegal to do this per FAA regs). Make sure you reserve a spot for your dog on the plane. Most economy classes only allow 3-4 dogs per flight. If you decide to do this, definitely read through the threads in this section. There is a lot of great info about flying with dogs. |

Thank you for taking the time to post your replies. As the time quickly approaches for the new little girl to be rescued and brought to a loving home and a baby sister, I am helping my friend compile and sort through any information which will make this long journey less stressful. Your recommendations are most welcome and I have taken your advice and read many of the other threads which are posted under "Traveling with Yorkies". Medical records, airline info and an appropriate travel crate are being gathered in preparation for the furbaby. As usual, the members of Yorkie Talk have graciously shown their concern for others and their willingness to help. |

ANy update on your friend? Is she going to rescue this little pup? |

I have flown from Japan to florida. Our first flight was Tokyo to LA, I don't remember now but I think it was like 18 hours or some rediculas thing. She stayed in her crate and slept almost the whole time. I just had food and water bowls for her and made sure she ate and drank. She did not have any accidents the whole time. We stayed over night in La and then flew the next day to Atlants where she could go potty and then into Orlando. As long as someone spends the time now getting her used to the crate she should be fine. I would have several layers of pee pads in the crate and if she has to go potty in there it can just be removed right away and tossed. You will need a health cert. and rabies cert. and your health cert can NOT be more than 10 days old. |

I think it is very doable.. a pp pad can be put on the floor.. the puppy will have a knee to cuddle into.. unlike a crate and alone!!! I am sure your friend will have water and food with her.. some toys to entertain her. maybe a bullie stick to keep her from getting bored.. and I am sure other people will also want to entertain such an adorable baby...please keep this post updated on how she made on on this trip... anne |

Thank you, thank you! I want you all to know that I show my friend every reply that I receive. They are so helpful and encouraging to her. She has made reservations with Delta Airlines because only Delta and Northwest airlines would except a dog in the cabin. The puppy will be coming here in August. We have asked her Aunt in Japan to email a picture of the precious girl and I will post it here. My friend's Aunt is taking the puppy for car journey's in a travel crate to get her used to being in one and so far the sweet baby has not had any problem settling down during the these trips. Please hold a good thought for her that all goes well and I will keep you posted. Thank you again YT moms for your help and concern. |

I am going to try to post a pic of the Japanese yorkie. I am not very good at this "thumbnail" posting yet, but here goes. She is 8 months old and between 3 and 4 pounds. Thanks again for helping out. |

1 Attachment(s) ok. Here is a pic of the puppy coming from Japan. I am told that she is very shy. She originally was owned by an elderly couple who found that they could not cope with a small puppy, then a family with young children tried to keep her but they discovered that one of the kids was allergic to dogs. She is with my friend's elderly aunt who also doesn't feel that she can manage a puppy. So she is only 8 months old and on her 3rd home....poor creature. But she just won the puppy lotto, because her last home will be like yorkie heaven on earth.;) I will keep you all posted. |

She's darling and I'm glad she's found her "forever" home. |

What a sweet puppy! I'm so glad she's finally found a good home. Anyone willing to pay for travel to/from Japan must have a heart of gold. Give your friend a big hug when you see her next. And tell her to get on YT!!!:p |
