cross country car trip Hi everyone --- we will be taking Bobo with us from MA to AZ later this month. He rides in the car pretty well, but so far he has never been anywhere over 2 hours. This is a 5 and a half day trip, according to Mapquest. I am going to look for pet friendly hotels via the web before we go. Any tips/suggestions? We want him to be as comfortable as possible. Thanks!!! |
Hi, we take ours with us to Oregon and Denver several times a year. He is really good in the car as long as we stop to potty and play for awhile. I try to give him time after meals to rest before we hit the road. Denver is about a 2 day trip each way and Oregon is usually 12-14 hours which we split up in 2 days. There are lots of hotels that now allow pets. good luck and have a safe trip. |
cross country trip Thanks -- that's reassuring. Are there any particular hotel chains you recommend? I was talking to the lady at AAA today and she said I should be sure to call ahead as the pet fees range from zero to exorbitant. :animal-pa |
I have the AAA pet friendly book. It lists pet friendly lodging. We take road trips and I make sure he gets plenty of rest and activity. |
Mine have traveled from Iowa to Atlanta, Ga a couple times & back. And a numer of 8 & 10 hour trips. They sleep most of the time - especially my Bubba. When we stop, I try to run them around a bit to wear them out. I think a big thing is keep Bobo on his regular schedule - feed him at the time of day he would normally eat, etc. The other thing is you might have to learn how he is going to tell you he needs to go potty. I found my Roxy will start panting - she's definitely not hot - this is a sign we need to stop. Be careful where & when you stop, as others with dogs may be at rest stops etc. Keep the harness on him throughout the trip & the leash nearby in case you need to stop quick for a potty break. Carry bottled water & a little dish for water. Mine have even had a drink while we were driving down the road. Drury Inns do not charge for pets. This thread has several great links http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ly-hotels.html Good luck, let us know how it goes. And if you can make a thread about yorkie friendly places that would be great. I have tried to do this when traveling. So others will know what a specific town offers. (which reminds me I need to write my Black Hills with yorkies thread) |
thanks so much for the feedback! I will def. keep notes on the hotels/towns where we stay and post it when we get back. |
