Moving Car Trauma Our 4 year old Yorkshire Terrier named Mia was traumatized when she jumped out of the window of the car while it was driving. This happened when she was about 3 months old. Since then Mia does not travel well. Mia has no fear getting in the car but as soon as the car starts driving she gets very tense and nervous. While my husband is driving I try to hold her and this does not work. We have tried a travel cage placed on the back seat and this does not work. She choses to stand and look out the window very tense and fearful. On our last trip that took about 8 hours it took Mia 1 day to recover as she was totally exhausted from the journey. We have given her 1 baby gravel to calm her down and this does not help. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?:confused: Thank you so much :aimeeyork |
If traveling is such an issue and you do long trips, I would talk with the vet and maybe get some sort of sedative. I know when we moved and took the cats, my vet recommended childrens benedryl. My girlfriend gave her cat something that really knocked her out for a good 4-5 hours (we had a 10 hour car ride). Have you thought about trying a snoozer type of car seat where Mia can be strapped in and still look out the window? At least you know she will be safe when she is in the car. Good luck. |

I agree... talk to the vet about a sedative for traveling. I also agree with the car seat thing. Now for me, the car seats are WAY too expensive, so I have a seat belt harness from petedge and I have a large, fluffy pillow for them to stand on. Of course, I have big babies (8 and 14 lbs), but maybe that would work for you. |
So she just wants to look out the windwo then? and this is what is causing her stress? Other than it being horribly painful for you to watch her like this- she isn't throwing up or anything right? I also like the idea of the car seat- she can sit or lay in it (so she will be less tense) and she can still look out. WHat about something like Rescue Remedy? Does that work? Although i don't imagine it would if the children's gravol did nothing. poor sweet girl |
