Traveling to Gatlinburg in the winter This year our family is considering going to Gatlinburg for winter vacation, and taking Dino with us! I would like to know about winter care for yorkies. I live in Miami so I have never had to deal with cold winters before. I will be taking him on strolls through town, and I plan on taking him to the Smokey Mountain state park. He will be outside a lot, so what are things I can do for him to stay warm. If anyone has traveled through the area can give me some good advice please let me know! Do you guys think we should rent a cabin or a condo? I was thinking about renting a cabin but a couple years ago we rented a cabin and it was very difficult to get to, we had to drive almost 20 minutes around curvy corners and hills to get to the cabin. I was looking and there is this area that has 1-5 bedroom condos with kitchen and everything, and it has more resort facilities like a pool. It is very pet friendly, and even has a dog run area. Thanks for your help! |
If you go in winter - it's definitely going to be cold! Make you take coats for them if they'll be outside and if you have a stroller, that'd be great. You can put a blankie in it and your baby can snuggle in. There's a great store either in Gatlinburg or Pigeonforge that sells pet clothing, too! |
Ellie went on vacation with us this year and we drove through there on our way to another state. Somewhere on YT I posted the list of stuff I had to pack for her. That might be good to look for. It wasn't cold, so she didn't require anything special...just normal travelling things. I guess I would add coats, sweatshirts and possibly doggie shoes to the list if it would've been cold. I would've also taken her Snugglesafe and extra blankets. I have no advice about the cabin vs. condo but I do know that there has been at least one black bear attack not far from there (probably wouldn't happen in winter), so she should be watched very carefully outside and I don't think I'd want to be too far from civilization or going down windy roads 6,000 feet up in the mountains.:) I think I'd go with the condo personally. |
Hello! I live about an hour away from Gatlinburg! I go there quite often & I would definitely prefer a cabin over a condo. It is one of my favorite times just to get away & relax in a nice cabin! It really depends on the cabin group you go with if you will be far up in the mountains or just a little far up with other cabins in sight. It depends on what you want. There are some nice condos also, but I just personally prefer a cabin. As far as the weather during the winter, it may be freezing cold and then on the other hand, it may be 60 degrees. Our winters have been kinda crazy the past 3-4 years. We never know what to expect, so just keep a watch out on the weather before you leave to know what to bring. Let me know if you need any help on what to do while you are there! Hope you have fun in Tennessee!!!!:aimeeyork |
Hey I live about an hour from there too. I totally agree, Cabin over Condo. I would just pack for cold weather, and a few things for warmer weather. Anymore it can change on a dime around here. Have Fun |

How did your trip go? Just curious how your trip to Gatlinburg went and how your furbaby did. We took a fall family vacation to Pigeon Forge; my Toby had just passed away  and I didn't have Olivia yet but our 2 granddogs did go with our kids. We had a cabin that all 6 adults, 3 kids + 2 furbabies stayed in and we really enjoyed it. I saw the pet clothing/accessory store that another poster referenced, in the downtown mall in Gatlinburg. We saw lots of people walking with their pupsters in strollers - too cute! Hope you had a wonderful trip! |
I went there in 07 and we stayed in a condo and my sister in law stayed in a cabin... Hers was so much nicer than ours... She had a 3 bedroom cabin with 2 1/2 baths. It was three story and I think it runs for 129.00 a night. You can also get one with 2 bedroom, fireplace and all for around 99.00 a night. They are so nice and cozy. i just booked for there again this summer and I can't wait... Beautiful country.....Good luck...:) |
This was posted back in October so I'm sure you've already went. How was it? We're planning on going in February, I've been before but haven't been with Lilly and we'll most likely be taking her with us. |
