Traveling Suggestions I'm going on an unexpected 4-5 hour road trip with my bf (who will be doing the driving) and plan on bringing Sasha. She's 4 1/2 months and this will be her first time in a car (we'll actually be in an SUV) for this long. Any suggestions, tips on traveling with yorkies? The short times she has been in the car, she never likes to sit still so I'm worried about how she's going to fare. |
She'll be just fine. Mine always loved to travel and would just go to sleep when they got tired. I always made a bed for them. You may have a carrier or crate yours prefers. Take nutrical, plenty of water, food, leash, and I always take paper towels and a bottle of water to clean up anything unexpected as well as carrying towelettes.:D |
I have the snoozer dog carseat. My 7 pound Yorkie can sit or lay down in it. I ordered it online and it came with a harness and seatbelt connector. I got it from Hunter K9 Gear, she LOVES it. I also take collapsable food and water dishes for her and a leash with harness. She has treats etc, so she's actually more comfy on the car trips than we are. |
Mine ride in their crates in the car and we make plenty of stops along the way...for stretching and potty breaks. Don't forget to take along a bowl and bottled water. |

If she gets carsick, it is best to not let her eat before the ride. Stop frequently--like every 90 minutes, and let her have little sips of water. Have fun. |
As the owner of 2 who HATE riding in cars... For any long car trips (which is almost never) I give them a PetEase. I seem to remember somone mentioning an herbal calming agent not long ago, but I really don't remember exactly... |

You are probably already driving and won't see this, but I'll post anyway. Driving is soothing to my 4 month old puppy, and she sleeps in her Sherpa pet carrier on the floor, but likes the top open so she can look up and see us occasionally. Not as safe as enclosed with a seatbelt, but at least she isn't fussing. I saw some pet car seats at Walmart recently, and will check them out further. By the way, I did a double take with your avatar. That pose & head tilt looked exactly like my Tiki. Have a good trip. |
I am kinda glad that I took Haruka to many places even when she was smaller.. because now she is such a traveler and I don't have to worry at all... She just loves going places and sleeps through in the car :) I haven't read everyone else's response (yet) but I saw some good suggestions. I also bring wipes... I usually bring bring wipes that you can buy it like 99 cents at pharmacy.. for 15-16 of them or something like that. I use it for myself..... so I have a couple of them in the car.... I don't know if it would be better to use the doggie wipe if the dog licks their private parts? But Haruka doesn't.. so I never need to worry. Haruka is pretty good about not having mess when she goes to bathroom. But sometimes some dogs can get nervous.. or react in change of the places..etc.. so they may have soft poop etc.... I also bring a lot of water for us and Haruka to drink on road trip :) One time... she had an accident in the car... (only because I didn't recognize the sign of her saying "I need to go"... soon enough...) and I was so glad that I had a couple bottles of water. There was no access to water for sometime.. so I was able to wash some stuff... and she also felt good after being wiped etc.... it was only one time thing.. but I was glad to have some wipes and waters in the car. |
My suggestion is to make sure that she can see out of the windows to a point. It seem to help Hot Rod. He got sick the first couple of times in the car and once he was elevated enough he seemed to be fine and has not gotten sick since. I have the snoozer car seat, love it. |
