Going to be traveling with a new baby, I need suggestions for things to have!! I'm getting a sister for Duke on Thursday!! I'm so excited, I have been waiting for 3 months now. I'm a little nervous though, we are picking her up in Iowa and driving back to California. So far I have: A bag to carry her in blankets outfits a travel water bottle/food bowl Food Nutrical potty pads harness/leash I'm mostly worried about feeding because we will be in the car so much, I don't want her to get hypoglycemic and I am going to have to have her go potty outside on our stops along the way. Does anyone know of anything else that I should make sure to have?? Or any suggestions for anything else as far as driving with a little pup. I've never even had Duke in the car for a trip this long. |
car seat What about a dog car seat? I have had Alastor fly out of my arms (when i THOUGHT I was holding him safetly) when a car stopped in front of us. Scary. Plus, it may give your new girl some alone time if she gets over stimulated. |
Just be careful where you set her down to potty if shes not fully vaccinated. Three days after I got my baby I had to make a few hours drive to visit my aunt in the hospital. I asked the vet and he said to either bring a pee pad to place on concrete or have her go on concrete. He said if she has to go on grass then to set her on some that is not at a park/rest area/well used and pick her up quick when shes done. That way you can help prevent doggie diseases like parvo. |

How often did you stop to have her try to go potty? |
This would be a perfect time to break her in with a car seat. I'd highly recommend a Look out car seat. It seems to help keep them from getting car sick. Speaking of car sickness, take a roll of paper towels with you and some doggie wet wipes. When the girls were babies we always stopped every two hours to let them walk around and get a drink. Every fourth hour we would let them eat after their potty and a little walking around. I home cook, so we took their food in a cooler. Even though they can hold themselves for a long time, we still stop every 2 & 1/2 to 3 hours for a nice long walk and a drink. They love traveling because we have made it enjoyable for them. |
I will add "BABY WIPES".... Haruka is pretty good about being clean.. but sometimes... she has soft poops or steps on pee.. so I always have baby wipes in my car :) and small package one in my bag.. |
We just got back on Sunday from a 7 or longer hour drive from North Carolina to VA with our two new Yorkies. They slept alot, we had lots of people to hold them, but we did have a soft sided carrier just in case we needed it, but it ended up holding all of their little belongings (like a diaper bag!) I got a little worried about ours because they got a little carsick a couple of times, usually after I tried to get them to eat and stuff. I gave them a few fingerfuls of nutrical (they did not like it) so that made me feel better. Papertowels and Baby wipes are a lifesaver! Also a blanket/towel etc. Maybe ask the breeder if you can kinda get the rest of the litters scent on it before you leave, kinda let the others lay on it etc. It wasn't bad for us, because we had two, they snuggled together. Also an idea for you: At night, I don't know if you are going to crate her in the hotel or what, but when we drove up from picking up our Bichon puppies about 8 years ago, we put them in the bathtub for the night with food and water. That way we didn't have to worry about them messing in the hotel, as it was contained, and the liquid mess just went right down the drain. Plus, they are free to move around and stuff, just they cannot get stuck/trapped lost anywhere. Plus, I am sure the hotel is not puppy proof. |

Thanks everyone! I wasn't able to log in yesterday at all because everything got crazy the night before we left, so I am replying late. But, we are in Iowa now, I pick her up later this evening. Thanks so much for all the replies, they were definitely helpful!:) |
Good Luck with traveling! I hope she does well. I know you will be excited to get her home and start bonding. Our two new yorkies have been with us for exactly one week and they already know our voices and Teddy knows his name, so does Dixie. We are getting ready to take them for a trip to see their Grandma who lives in West Virginia. Dont forget to post pictures soon! |
