I don't remember the whole thing (my sister has brought 2 dogs in via direct release) - but they have to be microchipped, they have to have 2 sets of rabies shot within a certain time frame, they have to get this blood test done, that the results take 120 days, and then they are allowed into Hawaii, they have to have a health cert. within 10 or 14 days of arrival, you have to pay about $160 +/- and you have to send all this stuff to them in advance. Then they enter it all into their system and tell you that you have everything in order. The pets must fly in cargo and the airline transports them directly to the office of agriculture, where they are examined by a Vet and then released to you. It takes about 45 mins once you are off the plane. That's in Honolulu.
You can also do this on other Islands (that are permitted by DOA). You still have to go through everything on the checklist and you still have to send all the paperwork to the DOA, but once approved, they allow you to set up having your Vet meet you at the 'other island' airport to check the pet and you over.
It is still a process, b/c you need that blood test done and it take 120 days to be approved, but once approved it is good for either 2 or 3 yrs and then all you have to do is make sure everything else on the check list is in order. |
