Son's Surgery Tuesday Jan 4th I can't sleep, 4:20 am here and in a little less than 6 hours I have to have my son at the hospital for his shoulder surgery. It is a double surgery to repair two football injuries. He plays college football in Jackson, MS. His first year was pretty rough. He broke his right wrist during practice and had to have that in a cast for 6 weeks, that stopped his Wide Receiver job. The cast came off and the very next weekend, he played D-Back in a game and took on two guys at once. Flattened one, stopped the other but separated his shoulder and completely tore the labrum (shoulder cartilage). The first doc only found the separated shoulder which was obvious & actually dx'ed on the field. He was doing a wait & watch. But the pain never went away since Oct 30th. So, when he came home on Christmas break I took him to our Orthopedic doc who did the MRI & found the torn labrum. That brings us to tomorrow/actually later this morning, when he will have the surgery to repair both problems. I would greatly appreciate any prayers and/or good wishes you all could offer. We have a great ortho doc and I am sure he will do fine. I believe in the power of prayer though, and KNOW it will help to make his recovery smoother and faster. He starts classes Jan 10th. So, I'll have to drive him back up there. He will be in a sling for 6 more weeks. I'm hoping he can find a pretty girl to help carry his books. ;) Thanks in advance! |
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son. I hope that his surgery is successful and that he is free from pain and that his body heals very quickly. I understand your worries since he is your baby; no matter how old they get, that never changes. |
Theres nothing worse than worrying about your kids, whether skin or fur kids. My prayers will include you and your son. Im with you, the power of prayer is pretty big! |
Will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. He will be just fine. :) Hugs to you. |
Ouch, sounds painful. Sending prayers for your son's recovery! |
Our babies are always our babies :-) and when they hurt we hurt. I will definately keep your son (and you) in my thoughts and prayers - and add a few for the medical team that will be caring for him. Please update us as soon as you can. |
Sending good thoughts and prayers to you and your son for successful surgery and a speedy recovery. |
Ouch...sounds very painful, still yet they love to play football, don't they?! I will definitely keep him in my thoughts and prayers, Debra.....even for the pretty book carrier:) ....and for you♥ |
I will keep him in my prayers for a safe and successful surgery. I hope he finds that pretty girl too! lol |
Debra, I hope all went well with the surgery today. I'll be keeping your son in my prayers for a fast and complete recovery. |
sending warm healing thoughts to your son. I've been in your shoes, my son has had a total of 4 shoulder surgeries. he did well after all of them....just have him use enough pillows so he can sleep basically sitting up. lots of ice and pain pills as directed and he should be pretty comfortable in a few days. |
just seeing this. I hope your son made out good today. Saying prayers for a fast recovery. |
Just saw this, sending prayers and good thoughts for your son's successful recovery. Many good wishes to your both. |
Just wanted to check and see if we had any news...sending hugs, and prayers and keeping your son in our thoughts. Hope he has a very speedy recovery and hope you were able to get some sleep...I know how hard it is being a mom we worry all the time. Hugs and prayers Cheryl & Lexi |
Hope all is well and your son is doing well tonight. |
Sending prayers... a bit late (sorry I just saw this), but if nothing else they can be for a speedy recovery! I hope he's doing well. |
Thinking of you and your son. I hope the surgery was successful, that your heart feels lighter, and that your mind is able to rest easier. I will keep both of you in my prayers. |
Sending prayers for a quick and successful healing......and for a pretty and kind girl to carry your son's books! |
Just seeing this. Hope that surgery went well and that he has an easy recovery. |
Thanks so much for all the prayers and good thoughts! Y'all are amazing! Dustin did very well with his surgery. The doc was able to repair both injuries and Dustin was one tough kid! Everyone kept telling us this was a very painful surgery but Dustin was doing well and not complaining at all. He even turned down the nerve block they offered as extra post-pain relief. He said he did not like the sound of a needle in his neck. ;) But around 10 pm tonight the pain started in with a vengeance. He decided to go ahead and take some pain pills. I know he will have a rough couple of days but hope the pain subsides after that. Continued prayers for a smooth recovery are welcomed! I am so relieved the surgery is done. It was outpatient surgery but any time you go under general anesthesia it is a little scary to me. I really do appreciate every one of you! I have been blessed with knowing all of you! You have all enriched my life! |
Thanks so much for the update on Dustin's surgery. Hope his pain stays at a minimum today and glad all went well yesterday. Also hope you were finally able to get some sleep last night. |
Debra, just saw this. There is nothing worse than your baby (and I don't care how old he is) going under anesthesia. Prayers for a speedy recovery. Glad the surgery went well. |
Oh no! Just seeing this now... glad his surgery went well... I'll keep him in my prayers for a smooth and rapid recovery.... |

Glad Dustin is doing well. Tell him he will heal much faster if he takes at least enough pain medication to let him get rest. I tried the stoic "I can take it" route after my last surgery because I don't like to feel out of it, but my doctor gave me a heart-to-heart about the importance of controlling pain. It's not a sign of weakness take PRESCRIBED meds when they're necessary. Hope you are getting some rest now that the surgery is over! |
Debra, How did I miss this post and of course you never mentioned it prior to the surgery. I'm glad all has turned out good, but I can imagine the stress you were going through. But, you just kept plugging along and never letting on. |
Boopster -- I did tell him he can actually heal faster if the body does not have to contend with pain. He didn't think he needed it at first (think there was some after-surgery numbness going on there). But after the pain really started in, he was happy to take his pills. Mary -- Sorry I did not mention it earlier. I think I stayed on yorkie matters trying to NOT think about it. I was more worried than he was. He just saw the long range of finally getting his problem taken care of. The doc said he could not believe he had been dealing with it since the injury October 30th! I think the doc he was seeing near his college was more into sending the players back to the coach ready to play and downsizing any problem. But he never even did the MRI which is what showed the completely torn labrum in addition to the separated shoulder. The separated shoulders are sometimes allowed to mend on their own and the person is left with a bump on their collarbone. But since the labrum HAD to be fixed, the doc went ahead and fixed it too. Everyone's prayers and good wishes -- THANKS so much. I am a huge believer in the power of prayer and I know that is making his recovery smoother. I appreciate you all so very much! I have been VERY busy playing nurse the last couple of days, but tonight he felt well enough to leave the house. A friend picked him up & they went off to see a basketball game. I will still have to drive him up to school this weekend, but after that he should be good to go. Tough kid! I made it through the other two with no surgeries or broken bones, but he has made up for it -- all sports injuries except the tonsils. But it never takes away his enthusiasm for the game. That boy LOVES football! |
