Looking for a breeding Mentor in the Scottsdale/Phoenix Area Hi! I'm looking for a breeding mentor in the Scottsdale area. If you are interested in taking me under your wing, please let me know. Kevin |
Hello Kevin....I am thinking you would have more luck finding a mentor at dog shows...Breeders really like to know the people they are mentoring personally, so they can judge first hand for themselves, what type of ethics and accountability and knowledge base and devotion to "doing right by the breed". Usually, it takes quite a while for someone wanting to start a breeding program, to build up the confidence needed for an established breeder to share knowledge that has taken them many years, a ton of work and continuing education siminars, as well as a ton of money to acquire. They want to be absolutely certain that your motivation for getting into breeding is not for financial gain, (which you will not find there!) but rather to continue and contribute to the breed standard. This takes a lot of dedication and work on your part, before you can expect to get anything from established breeders. There are too many people that want to breed dogs that have absolutely no idea of what has come before them, what breeders have done to establish these gorgeous lines and fabulous pedigrees that are strong and carry the image of the line down through the years. They see a path to quick money in this, and nothing could be further from the truth....for serious, devoted breeders, show breeders.....BYB'rs and puppy mill breeders can make money because they spend nothing on the development of their dogs or the health of their dogs...they mass produce sick puppies and then dump them on the public any way they can and it does not concern them in the least! |
Thank you, YorkieMom1. I appreciate the candid remarks, and the guidance. It's unfortunate that breeders are so skeptical, but I wasn't born yesterday, and I know why they are leary of investing in someone. It's also a condition found in our society at large. There was a time when we were more trusting as a nation, and jumped at the opportunity to assist someone with interest in our art and science. I have spent years in animal husbandry and found this to be the case in different sectors, but not all. I will follow your advice. I have already looked for a club in Arizona without much success. I will keep looking. I'm a 52 year old Executive Coach who has an executive MBA, and two Master's Certificates. I'm looking for someone to invest in me and my life, making it better, just as I invest in the many lives of executives, managers, and leaders around the nation. I have a person who has offered to mentor me already. They know me well enough to know that they want to offer help, advice, and assistance to me. Good for them. Good for me. They live 1 1/2 hours aways, and I was hoping that this post would assist me in finding a person near me. I am not hoping to find a mentor because I posted here, but to find someone with an open heart to get to know me. It's much like a dating site. LOL You don't expect a marriage proposal from your first post, just someone who will respond. I plan to get to know anyone I choose as a mentor. I've seen various personalities in husbandry, and many make me run in the opposite direction! LOL I'm sure you've seen the type. Kevin |
Thank you for you note. I appears that my response was not approved, so I'll try again. I understand a breeder's concerns. I already have a lovely person who has agreed to be my mentor, but distance is an issue. I need someone closer to where I live. If we desire to avoid backyard breeders, then it would be best if established breeders would step up to the plate more willingly. As for backyard breeders, they will breed regardless of whether or not we mentor them. I suggest reform. Let's step up to the plate and help the interested breeder by mentoring them. The backyard breeders will never go away, but we can work together to improve the quality of breeders who are reaching out for mentoring. I know that there are reasons why breeders are skeptical, but I am just interested in speaking to someone. It's like a dating site. You don't expect a marriage proposal from the first post. You're just hoping for a response. I would LOVE to attend some shows. However, I can't find them... I can't find a local club or a club for our state of Arizona. Perhaps, someone knows if they exist in Arizona I thought this would be a forum of comrads who might be able to assist me in finding someone who would establish a friendship with me for the purpose of learning and growing. I do this everyday as I provide executive coaching to the "haves" and the "have nots". I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of my Master's level business education, and I have spent thousands of hours honing my skills and knowledge. Today, I give back. Today, I mentor those who ask for it. I don't withhold help from those who ask for it. When all is said and done, I would like to join the Yorkie family. I'm just not sure who will find room at the table for my chair. Kevin |
