Help from a Vet or Expert Needed Im looking to buy a puppy this summer. I love the look of yorkies and morkies. The only puppies I can afford are from breeders that are BYB. They cost around 600. They truly love and care for their dogs and I have made sure the puppies are raised correctly and are up to date on shots. My question/dilemna is, If I buy a morkie or yorkie from someone that isnt AKC registered like from a BYB what are the chances my puppy will be unhealthy. All the breeders I have talked to make it sound like my puppy will have all kinds of problems, but if you look at the many people with mutt dogs, they are perfectly healthy. Are morkies going to be more healthy than yorkies? Please help any advice is appreciated |
Sorry no one has answered you - not sure how a Maine girl ended up posting a thread in the Southwest USA forum - but here is an answer from a Midwest girl! If I were you I would save my money and wait to buy a yorkie from a reputable breeder. Don't risk it on a backyard breeder. Or perhaps you could adopt a puppy from a rescue. That way you are saving a life, helping the rescue out and they do not charge that much - check Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder -- put in your zip code & you will be surprised how many yorkies you will find. A Morkie is not necessarily going to be healthier than a yorkie. I'm not a huge fan of mixed dogs. Yorkies that have been bred to standard are less likely to have health problems - if you have a good breeder you will have someone who doesn't just put 2 dogs together. If you are going to buy from a breeder -- do your research first!! And a great place to start, is to read this thread! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html |
I understand people have different budgets for buying things, but when you buy a dog, you must keep in mind, upkeep. What if the bargain puppy has Luxating Patella and needs surgery? At the cost of $2000 per leg, this can be a very expensive proposition. How about Liver Shunt, again another $3000. A back yard breeder doesn't do any health testing, and doesn't know her line, so she has no idea of the genetic faults in the background. With a good breeder, there will be heath guarantees. As far as I'm concerned only the well off can afford to buy a cheap pet. A dog is an impulse decision for many, and there are many expenses the first year, so many people buy a dog, and then can't afford to take it to the emergency room for illnesses that crop up. The first year is expensive, with neutering/ spaying and teeth extraction. It may be best to save your money, and wait until you have a little nest egg. As far as mutts being healthy, many people just put them to sleep at the first sign of a problem, even for something as minor as a broken leg. :( No, morkies will not be any more healthy than Yorkies. Maltese have many genetic problems as well, and finding the best possible breeder, who does testing is your best insurance. |
