Newbie from B'ham Hey Everyone, just wanted to say hello. I'm a new mom. My baby's name is Sadie! She is now 8 weeks and 1.4 lbs. Please give me any tips on house breaking and biting! Thanks!:) |
housebreaking the best thing to use is a crate, some people think they are cruel but I think it's cruel and irresponisble to leave your puppy out when you can't keep an eye on them, they don't know that chewing on certain things like electrical cords and some plants can kill, not to mention choking on something. I'd sure hate to come home and find my puppy hurt or worse, a crate is a great way to housebreak and also it gives them thier own space, also when company comes it's nice to have a place for them. I've never had any luck with the puppy pads they just tear them apart. LOL. good luck and be patient. |
Welcome to YT. Crate training is really important. It will save you a lot of heartache as gloriajean explained. |
Welcome to YT. You are going to love it here! |
Hey, I not far from B'ham at all! I don't have any advice on training (still working on it) but, I think the biting is just a puppy thing...I didn't think Cocoa would ever stop biting but, recently I've noticed he has; he is 10 months, Welcome to YT!:) |
WELCOME to YT, and Congrats on being owned by a most remarkable breed! Biting: Puppy gums hurt and itch, just like human babies. Keep chew toys, so your hands won't feel like needles and pins! Housebreaking: Yorkies are (usually) pretty hard to train. There are some exceptions; but, you must go into it with patience, Patience, and more PATIENCE. Consistency is KEY to success. Remember Sadie's bladder is tiny, so accidents will happen; but, decide where you want him to go potty, and take her there every 30min (at first). Mine was trained to paper, so I had paper potty stations in just about every room (at first). Then, as she grew, I removed one at a time. It is very important to lavish PRAISE when he is successful. Potty Party! Don't get discouraged, just be vigilant. Watch for accidents, and put her immediately in the acceptable potty place (wherever that might be) And, remember also that he doesn't lie awake plotting where to pee or poop just to see those terrible faces from mommie! She won't even make the connection between the urge to go,and where she's supposed to go until he's 12weeks! |
Thank You! Thank you all for being so kind and helpful! We have good days and bad days with the potty training but i am very realistic about it. She is getting more playful by the day and her personality really starts to shine. She is VERY nosy and wants eveyones attention. She doesn't understand when others (including other dogs) don't give her as much attention as we do :) I have some new pics that i will post soon! Thanks again, Jenny |
