Want to breed my beautiful 5lb. female for the 1st time..HELP! I want to breed my 5lb. female and have never bred before. Do any of you have any recommendations and/or advice? Do any of you know of healthy small male prospects? Thanks!:animal36 (in Raleigh, NC) |
I'm not a breeder, so I cant help you there, but I do know that you should do the most research you can possibly do before getting started. Also, maybe you can find a "mentor" to guide you, maybe someone close to you. I have read too many stories about what has "gone wrong" and the pups have died, and sometimes the mommy. Also, make sure you find a GOOD and experienced vet beforehand as well. Some of these quacks just "guess" and have no idea about these little breeds and they often cause you more heartache than help.... JMO....I wish you the best! I'm sure you will find some great advice here, so I'm glad you've stopped by!! |

I would like to add that it is a big responsibility where you have to be prepared that you could lose your little pet in the process. If you go ahead anyway and breed her, how would you know if she is in trouble before or during or after whelp to know when to find help? Did you know that even the best vets cannot always save the puppies and/or dam when things go terribly wrong? How much do you know about the background of your female, what genetic problems she may not exhibit herself but could be inherited in puppies? Is she the best representative of the breed that you would be contributing to the breed by breeding her rather than just having puppies? Are you prepared to be be home from several days before due date and until the puppies are at least a week or more old especially for a first time mom? Can you be up every 90 minutes 24/7 for days on end if there is a weak pup or mom can't or won't nurse? And then deal with the likelihood after all that that you lose one or two pups anyway despite your efforts? I think you would be better off to have her spayed and enjoy the pet you have that you bought her to be, a pet for you. |

I have a 5 lb yorkie who is one year -I was told by my vet that she is really too small to breed-it was dangerous. We already felt that by looking at how little she was and we did not want to take any chances, put her through pain, or hurt her health. I suggest you talk to a good vet before you do anything. Good luck |
Good Luck in whatever you decide for your baby. Keep asking questions, that is how you will learn. |
i think there are plenty of people who breed 5lb yorkies but i think you should do some research and learn from someone maybe a YT breeder or a reputable breeder near you. |
