Need Help..New Pup Losing Use of Back Legs I got a new yorkie pup the week of October. I noticed he was pretty clumsy but figured it was due to puppiness. As he has gotten older, he seems to be losing strength in his back legs. Especially his back left leg. He can no longer run, when he gets in a hurry he tends to walk, trot sideways and he falls over a LOT! Vet says it is not a medical problem but perhaps neurological. He is on his 3rd meds now with no effects from them. They were antibotics, then steroids and cortisone. Have recently ordered him some tall shoes in hopes they may help. This problems seems to get worse the older he gets. Anyone ever heard of this before??? HELPPPPPPPPP:confused: |
You need to see a specialist -- a neurological vet. You're in Tennessee. If I were you, I would head straight to the Veterinary School at the University of Tennessee. Your pup will get the best of care there, and it won't cost as much as going to specialists locally. If you get tests done by a local neurological vet, they would likely want to repeat the tests themselves at UT, so you might as well start out with the best. I'm sorry your pup is having such a hard time, and I hope you get the answers/help that you need. |
Your vet may have meant a condition which can not be treated as there are neurlogical issues which are un-treated. Have you had a bile acid test performed? Those symptoms are classic for liver shunt including the fact he's getting worse as time progresses. The longer LS isn't treated the more damage that occurs to the liver. Have you contacted the breeder from whom you bought him? I would do that to see if they know of any history of this, and also to let them know what is going on so they don't breed that pair of dogs again and to let them know in the event that you have to collect on the guarantee. |
Did your vet recommend a neurologist? I would try to get your baby seen by one soon. I hope all goes well. Good Luck |
It may be best to put him on crate rest until he is seen by a neurologist, you may need a referral from your regular vet, and you should do this ASAP, as timing can be critical.... |
Bad News I got a referral from my vet and took him to Vet Specialists on Sidco Drive in Nashville. They took x-rays and after over an hour exam, came back with the results. He has Atlantoaxial Instability (Luxation). Basically he is slowly being paralyzed. The actually worst part is that as this progresses, his internal organs will freeze up also...mainly his diaphram which will cause him to suffocate...slowly. He is in advanced stages, was born with it and although they advised surgery, he will only have a less than 70 percent chance. Complications include death of course. I cannot afford surgery and have applied everywhere for assistance for this surgery. Have even put it on several "Wish" sites in hopes that someone with a little money could donate for his surgery. Doesn't have to be money, even finding a surgeon to do it for free would be awesome. Running out of time though. Any suggestions would be great??? :( |

On another thread you said you cannot afford his care now that he has AAI. I hope you are looking for and contacting reputable yorkie rescues in your area to see if they can take him in. I hope you aren't going to simply keep him and watch him suffer with this since you can't pay for his treatment and/or surgery for his AAI...that would be extremely cruel IMHO... If you truly have exhausted all aspects of financial aid and don't have any credit cards to pay for this, please do what is best for him, surrender him to a rescue in your area, one that will make sure he gets the special Vet care needed for him to be a happy and healthy pup! Please do not deny him that, it's simply not fare and very cruel... |

I remember your loss of little Hootie after LS surgery last year and how sad that was... and here you are faced with more required medical care on your new little pup. It would be the greatest show of love if you could give him to a Rescue Organization... They will take him to the vet and see that he has everything he needs to have a chance at recovery and having a normal life. Please find it in your heart to do this for him... you really have no other choice... as his medical needs are critical and he needs help right away... I will pray that you can make the right decision for him and allow him to be saved.... |
