Should you buy a yorkie without papers? I have been looking for a puppy for a while now. I just saw that someone is selling puppies but the ad stated that they are only selling puppies for pets and they do not come with papers. Please help I dont know what to do.

What you need to think about first is have the parents been tested for the usual Yorky inherited problems, that being Legg Perths,liver shunt, whether they have sturdy patellas, etc.

Do you want a pet or a show prospect? Do the breeders show their dogs?
Do they test for the above mentioned problems, and other commonly tested for anomalies?

Some breeders sell perfectly good dogs without papers. It is expensive to go after someone with a lawsuit if they have signed a spay/neuter contract and turn around and breed the pup anyway. Some folks can figure out how to fake papers and get by with that until they are caught. However, it is expensive for the breeder to pursue. Most honest people, however, will be discouraged from breeding if they don't have papers.

Then again, folks can breed their dogs without papers and sell the resulting pups witout papers also.
You just have to ask them why they are doing this, it should not insult them and most likely they won't mind answering.
Do they have a health guarantee on the puppy, for how long?
Has it had all the shots and worming for its age? Hopefully it is at least 3 months old? If it is younger, why are they letting it go so soon?

1) Learn and know about Yorky health
2) know what you want in a Yorky; does the AKC standard matter or not
for what you want?
Ask these folks as many questions about the puppies health, socialization,house training and anything else you can think of
Who is their vet? Can you ask questions of the vet about their dogs?(not sure the vet will answer certain questions due to client confidentiality?)
If you need help with training,grooming the pup, can you ask them anytime?

I found the following in another part of the regional forums on a "bad yorky reseller" I forget the exact one, and how to get it here, it does mention information about selling dogs without registration and limited registration.

I did a cut and paste for you to take a look at the following, just be aware, that selling without papers is easier for some folks to do, but even with the AKC limited registration, it can't keep people from doing what they want to do. I am in no way in favor of selling without papers or defying the limited registration. Its a shame, but it is a fact that some people are going to be dishonest,both buyers and sellers. Hopefully they are far and few between.

Ask questions and be aware of the facts in order to best arm yourself against most problems. You can't guard against everything and everyone, but do explore as far as you can. Keep learning!
