Pete I have a male yorkie named "Pete". He is 9 years old and he is constantly urinating on himself. The stench is practically unbearable. He also urinates on his bedding. It's so difficult to play with him when he smells so bad. After a bath he is ok smelling for about 2 days then he just wreaks! Any suggestions?????:aimeeyork |
More info is needed. How long has he been doing this? Surely he hasn't always just peed on himself without any medical explanation. Do you mean he dribbles on himself, or does he just stand and pee so that more is on him. Have you taken him to the Vet for a physical exam? At his age he is at greater risk for a real problem. He may just have a UTI which is easily cured with antibiotics and he could be in pain. Please give us more information. |
Pete He actually does the urinating while he is lounging around. Gave him bath today and within a few hours he had soaked himself again. Guess need to take him to the vet. My boyfriend's mother told me she saw a show on dogs and they (the show) said older yorkies like to pee on themselves. If that was the case I don't think they would be so popular. He is blind in one eye and has arthritis but gets around like nobody's business if you take your eye off of him when outside. He's really been doing this for about a yr. n a half. |
He needs to be seen by a vet and blood and urine tests done. He could have an infection or kidney disease which can be treated in most cases. Keep us posted. |

good luck ! |
Glad you wrote back. He is unable to control his bladder if he is just lounging around and "lets loose". He probably does have some sort of infection but the arthritis could be contributing to the problem. Many dogs are very good at hiding pain and if an owner is unable to detect it, he may be in so much discomfort it is harder for him to control himself. It may or may not be due to one specific problem. Please let us know what your Vet says. I'll bet after he is on treatment, you will have a sweet smelling baby again. BTW, the person on TV who said any dog likes to pee on itself is saddly mistaken. Male dogs "mark" territory but not on themselves. |
Thank you for your input. I will keep you posted. |
Good luck with Pete, I too would be interested in what the vet has to say. The only time I ever saw this was with a 7 year old Boxer that had a bladder infection. The incontinence stopped after 2 days on antibiotics (although we finished the prescription just in case). If it is just "leaking" from old age or another cause you might check out getting some "belly bands" for him. These are strips of fabric that you can wrap around his middle to soak up the urine. My mom uses one on her older male Yorkie and uses a pantyliner inside the belly band to soak up the urine, then it's changed when he goes outside to potty and as needed and to freshen him up.
