Creation of YorkieTalk Emergency Vet Fund!?!?! This thread has been started largely in response to Dena's thread "Need Advice", about her vet bill with Zoie. I was reading that thread and I got to thinking - with so many Yorkie Talk members, perhaps we could all get together and create an "Emergency Fund" amongst ourselves. Or does such a thing already exist on Yorkie Talk? I know there are already a number of emergency organizations out there, but as Dena pointed out" Those sites are really great.. but they are meant for people who truly have money problems or who are diabled.. or who have service dogs.. not for people like me who have a dog as a luxury. It doesn't feel right for me to get money from a place like that.. plus you have to provide them with all of your finances.. and i doubt i qualify, just because i have a luxury expensive dog... Know what i mean? If there is enough interest, and this is something we can conceivably do, then we can start hammering out some details! Just some thoughts I have kicking around: 1) Establish a bank account that people can contribute to from US and Canada 2) Establish a list of "eligible" recipients (ex. Yorkie Talk Members, have contributed to the fund, type of medical bill, etc.) 3) Contact Yorkie vets and breeders who might be interested in working with us! Let me know what you guys think! Add your comments here!!! |
I think this is an absolutly wonderful idea. But I'm pretty sure it's against the rules. :( |
If it's not against the rules, I'm in. |
GREAT IDEA! - seems like there are a lot of YT members having difficulties taking proper care of their babies due to lack of finances. This is just as important as getting funds for Yorkie rescues- in my opinion!! |
this has been brought up several times in the past and it is against the rules. i can't remember the exact words or find the thread, but admin said something to the effect of the members could do it privately thru pm's or something like that but no special forum will be made. |
I think this is a great idea and we should all put our thinking caps on to find a way to do that legally. Sure, there are going to be big challenges b/c even in our great YT community are going to be some black sheep but the overall benefit will weigh that out. |
Does anyone know how we can check the rules or contact the admin to find out exactly what we can and can't do? I have no wish to violate the rules of the forum - this website is great and so helpful! |
Man :( I sure wish it WASN'T against the rules because I think it is an absolute WONDERFUL idea. If people want to donate, it's their choice, and if not...they don't have to. I know that I personally WOULD feel more comfortable donating to those that I knew and trusted. And I don't mean that in a rude way, I think it is great to help out ANYONE who has sick and injured babies, but I honestly would probably only choose to donate to those who have been members of YT for a while in order not to fall victim to scams, or people just trying to con money out of others. I really do think this would be a fantastic idea though, because after all, the option to donate would be YOUR choice and YOUR choice only. I think it is wonderful and would really help those precious babies out that are in need! |
I'm sorry but I completely understand why it is against the rules. It would be so easy to take advantage of a situation such as this. :( |
I understand the idea/concept but there are so many issues to consider: Who is responsible for collecting the funds? What actually constitutes an emergency for withdrawal? What happens when members get upset (and they will) because someone is denied money? or even given money? There are a ton of potential problems with setting up a fund of this type. I know that all of your hearts are in the right place but I suppose it is my job to raise the red flags. |

Many hurdles There would be so may things to consider. There would need to be a committee of several people to administer the fund. Lots of work and pre planning. Probably need a lawyer to help draw up the paperwork. Isn't is sad that in today's society you need so many "precautions" to do something nice for someone? |
Thank you for your suggestion. YorkieTalk members can donate money or gifts or anything they please to whomever they want, we can't and don't stop that. However, we do not allow solicitations for money or funds in posts or threads here, or in Private Messages (PMs). There has been many past abuses (from people with 0 posts to people with 2000 posts) of asking the YorkieTalk community for money. We urge everyone to use their best judgment when giving anything to any member. YorkieTalk is not a place for any person to "beg" or "ask" for money. We believe members to be truthful, but asking for money is simply not allowed here. The donations that YorkieTalk collects goes into the costs and fees associated with running the community. While we would like to help all sick Yorkies, establishing a fund would be impossible for us to administer, as we would have to taken into account who is "worthy" of receiving such funds, whether the person is actually telling the truth, and why we would choose one member over someone else. Thus, we can not effectively and fairly run such a program here. That is why when we did the YT Fundraising Raffle this year, we did it for United Yorkie Rescue, an organization that helps Yorkie rescues and one that knows how to deal with such issues. Again, if you want to donate to a specific person or cause, you may do so. It is your right to do as you please with your hard-earned money. We do urge you to be careful so that you will not be scammed or taken advantage of. |
