Warning For Threads About Animal Cruelty-- Please?

I love animals, and it damages me emotionally to hear about animal cruelty news. I am sure I am not the only person significantly disturbed by these kinds of threads. I try to gauge the content of a thread by the title and avoid them, but I am not always successful. Even accidentally reading people's descriptions of animal abuse haunts me for days afterwards.

Yes, I am aware that animals get abused. I prefer not to read about them because a lot of the time it is all done and there is nothing I can do. I know some members deal with their frustration by sharing it here, which is perfectly fine. I prefer to donate to organizations that have the strength to deal with these cases, and I'd rather not find out about it at all.

Is it possible to ask members to use an abbreviation such as "AA" (animal abuse) or something similar in the title when they start these threads? Or, perhaps there could be a new icon to warn the other members about the content?

What do you guys think? What do you say Admin?

Potter 03-13-2007 07:21 PM

I do agree while its good to let people know and be aware of animal abuse cases, not everyone can forget after reading it. Some stories can haunt for months for those who cannot bear to read it and accidentaly reads it. Maybe its good to have some rating for cruelty stories. I really understand how some can fell after reading.

Yes, we agree that YT is most useful when thread titles are appropriately titled so that members know what they may be reading when they click on a thread. This is also helpful in future searches for topics as well.

So please, everyone title your threads appropriately, it's in the best interest of everybody! :)

It would be nice if the poster would put graphic thread on the ones that are too graphic. I have read and seen some disturbing pictures and videos on here that i would have rather not seen. I know it exists but there are some things i dont want to see with My own eyes

red98vett 03-14-2007 05:43 AM

MAYBE we can just ask Admin when we see one that's graphic and see if they can edit the post and put up a warning ?

I know I've posted some myself and always warn people of "Graphic Content".....but to be honest - what may be graphic and extremely upsetting to some is educational (and still upsetting) to others....I get haunted too and badly....but we still NEED to talk about these things....if everyone ignored it nothing would ever be done.

ooops - just saw Admins post. I'll shut up now LOL

JeanieK 03-14-2007 05:46 AM

Maybe there could be a forum especially for graphic posts.

TLC 03-14-2007 05:52 AM

I agree. I also donate $ all the time to various animal organizations. I wish I had the mind set to do physical support, but I don't.

I am the same as Lolabella in that somedays the tiniest amount of info I read haunts me for days and days. Then I try to avoid coming on YT b/c those thoughts creep back into my head.

I do like the Graphic Content idea. I hope people use that term wether there are pictures or just plain graphic text and verbage.

Thank you, I really would appreciate it. :)

V, I have seen you put a warning in the title, and thank you very much. If everyone else did that, it would be perfect. Just to clarify, in cases like Brushy Creek Investigation I agree that we should talk about it. I am willing to suck it up and be haunted if there is anything at all that I can do to alleviate the animals' suffering. I do believe that YT became a very important vessel for the investigative reporting done, and YT does come up in google searches for people that may not be aware.

Or, if we need to boycott a store for selling whatever item that resulted from cruelty, I'd like to know. I'd rather not know the details, but I'd want to be aware of the general picture, so I can do whatever is in my power.

On the other hand, I would really not find out about what some anonymous psychopath did to a poor animal. Internet and the world is full of sick, sick stuff. It's okay to want to spread awareness about these things too. I believe I am aware enough of the evil in the world, and unless there is something I can do, I would prefer not to know about specific cases at all. That's all.

It's not your fault, things need to be discussed, I just wish people would be gentler with their thread topics, with a warning............and a different forum would be an added bonus........I do what I can financially to help, mentally I can't go there...........Wish I could.........:)

Jenn218 03-15-2007 03:09 PM

How about if there was a specific place just to post about that....you know, like we have the garage sale thread, off topic thread, etc.

I too hate reading about that stuff and normally will try to bypass a post if I see that is what it is about. I know it happens and it happens too much (shouldn't happen at all), but I just can't stand to read about it....and it isn't one of those ignore it and it will go away type things....I give to animal charities, etc....I just hear about it too much as it is! (yikes)

I'm confused, title them how? I realize there are a lot of members here, and you can not control title to a certain extent. But your reply is confusing, should member's titles include what the topic is about? For example, the dog head issue was a duplicate thread, it was locked, but we still have to see it until enough threads are started before it goes away. So is that an appropriate title? This is not directed towards anyone, that thread was used as an example ONLY..............

rachelsyorkie 03-15-2007 03:42 PM

A lot of titles could be thought out more/more specific. I see this all the time
HELP!!!!!
1.Mom dog got a bad hair cut:mad:
HELP!!!!!
Mom dog died because I was on here asking what I should do when my 2.dog stops breathing instead of taking it to the vet rigt away :(
HELP!!!!
3.I have a interview for McDonalds & dont know what to wear:rolleyes:
HELP!!!!
4.I cant remember what I was going to post;)
I know I'm exaggerating but I think OMG what is wrong & then I'm relieved when its not a emergency but HELP!!!
Should be
1. Buffy got a bad hair cut
2.I cant post right now because my dog is dying & I am going to the vet
3. Ah screw it I'm wearin jeans & a T
4. Should have never been posted lol

And also In 4sale/wanted section some one will say Coming soon blah blah then start a whole new thread for the actual item & pics. Maybe its just easier to start a new one then look for the original.

I dont mind the stories about accidents or abuse, I learn from them & it touches me & makes me feel emotions & makes me want to do something to make the world better. I am active in saving some of those pets. When I see a animal being mistreated I will stop & tell the parents & ask if I can take the animal. Its reality & throwing cash at people wont make problems disappear but isnt that the american way. There are alot of idiots in this world. And hearing about it helps people see how wrong it is. I hold Tilula a little tighter & remember not to take her for granted. It really starts w/children so if you wanna help next time you see a child let them pet your dog & remind them that pets are more helpless then babies & we have to protect them not hurt them. You can make a difference w/your words & actions & knowing how often & aweful these crimes are is the motivation for that. I know the donations help to. But a trip to your childs classroom educating them on how to avoid getting bit/attacked, what the pound is & why you should spay/neuter-pet population. And I have also did that. It takes time to research, plan & do it but so worth it. I could go on & on-sorry

That's offensive. I have set up charity programs with my vet to help with rescue, and for people that can not afford to have their animals treated for whatever reason. I am hardly throwing cash around.............You can damn well believe if someone was abusing a pet that I was witness to I would be all over them, and have stopped many times when I felt an animal was being treated poorly. Don't be so quick to judge, I don't bury my head in the sand........

Further down in my post I also posted that I know the donations help with the problem- and I'm glad you actively help to. I have drained my savings transporting pups from our pound to other rescues to avoid the gas chamber, so I also do both. My post wasnt directed at you or anyone in particular. Its just my opinion & some other ideas for the titles of posts made. But when it comes right down to it if rules are set up on how posts can be made & what in detail can be posted people probably will go somewhere else for freedom of posting. If one donating member feels they can talk about a accident or abuse pertaining to a animal & another donating member doesnt want to hear about it....Its puppy politics & we just all have to try to meet in the middle or move around w/out colliding. I enjoy all the posts in one way or another, life is a learning experience to me & I try not to be over sensitive. Because so many times when I have gotten offended I have found the person really wasnt intending that & infact wasnt even talking about me at all.

TLC 03-15-2007 05:40 PM

God made everyone different. We all have different ways of thinking and reacting and living life. I have learned so much in the past 2 years of having TJ and Roxy. And not just about Yorkies, I have learned alot about everything in this world and I do want to learn more and help more where I can.

Unfortunate, I am overly sensitive, especially when it come to animal abuse and neglect - and my family and my friends. And as much as I would love to be able to read any story and learn and grow from it, I can't. Those images that my mind has created from reading those words haunt me for days. Sadness for that story (whether it be animal or human) consumes me for a few days, and it sucks. I do as much as I can in the way of cash contributions and care packages and I am very proud it of it. I also spread the word to whom ever I feel can benefit from it. I also do plan on teaching any children I might have the 'right' way to treat all of Gods creations.

Sorry for ranting...I just got very upset over some of the things said here in this thread.

All we were asking for is a word of Caution for Cruelty Stories (of any kind)that might be too graphic for the sensitive members.

The "Girl finds missing dog's head in box at house" was the actual title on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/15/dog...ap/index.html), if "Graphic Content" would have been added to that, that may have helped, but anyone clicking on that thread would know what that thread was all about based on the thread title. It was not a "HELP ME NOW"-type thread title to try and fool any members.

This news story was covered by all the media outlets and there are members here that want to discuss it. This topic does not break any YorkieTalk rules, and there are plenty of other threads regarding animal abuse on YT as well.

If members want to report posts with inappropriate or misleading titles, we can then correct the title. Actions may be taken against members that continuously mislabel their threads.

I was not implying any rules were broken, nor was I aware it was national news until I clicked on the one million post thread and saw the CNN link. (If you think about it, that is one heck of a misleading title :p)
Congratulations on a huge milestone!

Like I said in an earlier post, I just hope people can make gentler titles, nothing more.

Thank you for your response.
