New guidelines for sellers? Help for buyers Just wanted to share my two cents about breeders and selling…I hope that my YT family doesn’t mind. First and foremost, please do your homework when searching for a breeder. There are so many BYBs and puppymills out there. Buying over the internet is very tricky…I prefer for people to come and see what I have to offer as well as going to see someone’s pup personally. It’s easy to get cute puppy pics…especially if you know what angles to get. Another way of doing your homework is to ASK, ASK, ASK! Ask your fellow friends, trusted seasoned breeders and vets what their opinion is on a breeder. They may be able to bring up questions that you, yourself, haven’t thought of. Any friend or reputable person will be there to help you, point things out to you, and get you to open your eyes to something you may have missed. While I enjoy YT VERY much, I’ve noticed a lot of breeders lately. Breeders that are letting go of pups WAY to soon in hopes to make that Christmas sale. I think that there should be guidelines in order to post for sale ads here at YT. Maybe a certain number of post count would be a nice start. Also, if your pup is under a certain age, it should not be listed. There is so much that can change in how a pup looks from one week to the next and listing 1 or 2 week old pups shouldn’t be allowed. Also, I think that YT should look at the age at which the pup is allowed to go home. I think that most of us agree that the longer the pup is with mom, the better off the pup will be. Maybe something along the lines of nothing under 8 or 10 weeks should be listed in the for sale section. I’m just trying to look out for potential puppy buyers. I know that those of us that have been around a while know what to look for…but what about newbies…what about those that are guests just reading and trying to find a breeder? If you can think of something I've missed...please add it here!:) |
:bravo: :bravo: :bravo: :bravo: :bravo: GOOD POST Kimberley - and as a breeder yourself you know the red flags to look for in the many Sellers threads here ....but not everyone does, which is why I'd hate to see that section get so monitored that no one is free to post. I realize people don't like to see threads closed or get a negative .... but just think of all the people out there who LEARN from someone speaking up. This is where I've learned much of what I know ....and it's only because there ARE people here that care enough to call a Red Flag when they see one - People are going to sell no matter WHAT we say - but in most cases - it's the buyers who benefit from the more outspoken people on this site... and there sure are a ton of people out there breeding now - it's plain scary for the Yorkie Breed. |
bump! |
Kimberley, I absolutely agree with you! I think you said what many on here have been trying to advise others of recently. I think it is all good advice and it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to see it sometimes when you KNOW deep down it's not right!:( I think this is a fabulous site for EVERYONE--both rookies and vets--to learn from and help by offering their wisdom that comes only with many years experience. Lately, there doesn't seem to be a right way in offereing or getting this information because it always tends to not sit right with at least a few people. I've seen many people bring up very good points and offer very good information that could benefit so many, only to be scolded for "being rude" or "not minding their own business." SO WHAT if someone responds on a For Sale thread with a question or to point something out...even if they aren't interested in buying. MAYBE they have something to say that will help someone out! I know there is no way to regulate who does and doesn't post and enforce ethics on here, and it really stinks sometimes. But what if a newbie posting dogs for sale at say, 6 wks, honestly didn't know that was bad and it being mentioned taught them something? Wishful thinking, maybe, but who knows... |
I agree with you not everyone knows the red flags and buyers should research as much as possible before getting a new pup. There have been alot of questionale for sale posts recently and I am glad we have seasoned breeders on this site to bring things to our attention. Maybe if there were more restrictions on the posting it would keep someone from purchasing aa dog that gets sick or the new owner is disatisfied with |
My baby Chanel is 4-1/2 now - back when I found her & BEFORE I FOUND YORKIE SITES....I had NO IDEA what I was doing - I looked for the word teacup...looked for fluffy & cute & looked at sites like www.yorkiepup.com    (Jeff Danes Site) in the end - we bought her from a pretty bad breeder who DOES still sell at 6 weeks....& her 1st week with me - she was in the ER ...little did I know how close she came to death due to her SIZE AND AGE - 6 weeks IS too young to sell Yorkie puppies - it may be ok for larger breeds ....but not for the small breeds and I applaud those who speak up for the dogs. When people DO Speak up here - it can only help the new buyer like I once was - I know if I knew then what I know now ....I might not have my baby and she IS my baby - but there is so much information to share here - it only can help the next person who is looking for a new puppy. |

Actually you do have a good point - maybe they CAN regulate the ages these yorkies are being sold - I think there's a misconception that if someone posts HERE they must be ok - and that is NOT always the case - |
I would like to add that for some of us if it is on THIS site for sale we assume that it is right and that the pups are being taken care of. If the "good" breeders don't point out the things that are not right then how will we know? I am not a breeder. I got Pepper from a petstore...who got him from a puppymill...I didn't know any better at the time and Pepper is paying for it. He is a very sick little guy with an illness that is crippling him...my point is this: If I had known about this site before I got him I would have known better because of the good breeders who share their expertise so freely...but if I had seen a puppy for sale at say 6 weeks (or younger) I would have assumed that was ok and that the puppy was ready to leave its mom..and I would have been wrong! We NEED for the good breeders to question what they think is wrong, so that we can make an informed choice. |

I agree, maybe we can regulate the age that people can list their pups on here...I don\'t know how, but I\'m sure there\'s a way. Many of you make good points, many people probably do assume that it\'s okay since it\'s listed on this website...That\'s why it\'s so great that the good breeders speak up when they see red flags. |
Perhaps they could post a sticky, advising buyers of the various red flags to look for. That in itself would deter a lot of unethical sellers. Posting basically the same informstion that the OP of this thread posted. |

I think this is an excellent idea! At the very least there should be a disclaimer that just because they\'re listed here doesn\'t mean YT recommends the sellers. Like Villette, I knew next to nothing about yorkies when I first got Bentley. What I cared most about was getting a healthy puppy that wasn\'t from a pet store since I thought that\'s the only place where puppy mill puppies are sold. I didn\'t know until after I found these yorkie websites that there is so much more to finding a reputable breeder and of course the whole broker thing. As much as I love my boy he isn\'t anywhere close to the standard. Sherman is from a reputable breeder and the difference between them is remarkable. This site should be a resource to new yorkie owners as well as a "home" to seasoned yorkie owners to share information. I get upset when newbies are misinformed or unreputable breeders are using this site as free advertising. |
