After 5 Minutes You CAN'T Edit Your Own Post I've experienced a few times in the last few days where I couldn't edit my own post after 5 minutes. I understand the alleged reason of it's existence, but I necessarily don't agree with it. In fact, while participating in dozens and dozens of other forums and viewing hundreds more, I don't recall seeing anything similar. The most use of any limitation I see is after someone posts a reply, then the post can't be edited. But even so, I still see many forums even after someone posts, the original poster can still edit their own post. I suggest that there isn't a time frame involved in editing a post. It doesn't make sense to me. I do suggest that it's better once someone has replied to the post, then there can be a no-edit involved. At other places I've made several posts where I go back 10 or 20 minutes later, or even more and see no replies, then think of something different I want to subtract or add to the post or make a grammar or spelling edit, then have the opportunity to make those changes. Something to consider. Thanks, Matthias :) |
1 Attachment(s) Case in point! I just went to edit my own post to add one more line... "It would be nice to have the same opportunity here as well." I couldn't even add that due to this 5-minute clause. ;) And yes, it does reference there is a possibility to edit it, but the admin has to be contacted and that's not only a hassle and an inconvenience, often the exact wording is lost as to what wanted to be changed. And to contact an admin over a simple change wouldn't be worth it, etc. Reference attached photo! Matthias |
I have noticed that you can edit on your own page or a post you made on someone else's page after 5 minutes. I think YT does this so the thread can be followed instead of being confused by later posts from other members. If I have something very long to say, I usually write it off YT, then copy and paste. That stops my need to edit after 5 minutes. I am sure there are other reasons and maybe others can shed some light on this setting. |

This is a setting that will not be changed - due to the fact that we want to maintain the integrity of the communications occurring -and- because it's important that people be responsible for what they write here. It would not be okay for someone to post something where they break every rule in the house, calling people names or whatnot - only to be able to go back and erase their words, rather than being held responsible for their actions. Five minutes is plenty of time to correct any inaccuracies or whatnot. Beyond that if you need to post something more, just reply to the post and add your content - it's pretty simple. Btw, YT/Admin/Mods are not there to edit posts for simply adding some content/comments for you. We will edit threads where someone forgot something that is actually needed - for example, a For Sale thread where someone forgot the price or some very pertinent info, or needs the title changed due a mistake, or someone wants to add a "Warning" to a particularly graphic thread <---- those are the kinds of things where asking is appropriate. |
