Debates I have another idea  I know..I know..but really you all may like it. What about having a forum where we can debate? Hot topics like breeding tinies can be discussed and debated. Rules should still apply, but to discuss what we disagree with is not all bad. Some people may not want to be a part of it so they just don't go to the 'Hot Topic' forum. I personally like to hear both sides of everything. I think it would educational to see others discuss both sides. Anyone agree of having a forum where we can debate? I think we are mature enough to handle the heat. If not, the admins can do their duty. |
My honest opinion towards "debating" is that not everyone has the ability to do so while following the YT guidelines. It is proof that the controversial topic threads most likely end up getting closed for various reasons. Most of which is due to personal attacks against other YT members or going way off topic of the original thread. Speaking as a moderator, I feel that the moderators would be spending too much time monitoring the "debate" threads while more positive time could be spent welcoming a new member, helping someone w/ a Yorkie question, researching/learning information I seek out personally myself, or admiring all the photos, etc... I have high hopes to someday see the topics that are already posted within YT stay on topic and not get heated with insults and hurt feelings. |
i'm a newbie here so my opinion does not come with much experience on this particular board, but based on other boards i'm on, i find that ANYTHING has the potential for turning into a debate. it really just depends on the members and how everyone decides to conduct themselves in what should be a civil discussion no matter the topic. obvious topics like neuter/no neuter, breeding tinies/not breeding tinies, pet store/breeder, may be a no brainer when being relegated to the "debate" forum, but what about topics that start out seemingly innocent then get off track into a debate due to one person's choice of words? so personally i don't see how a specific "debate" forum would really help other than give a rubber stamp to some members to be more "in your face" with one's verbage. i think everyone should just learn to be civil and conduct themselves respectfully no matter the forum. Even if it's "your habit" to be frank and truthful, it is possible be respectful and still "tell-it-like-it-is". |

LOL !! I've seen and been on a site with a Debate section.....Some people love to debate too much and to be honest...they get out of hand. I have a feeling the same would apply here. |
I think it is a great idea. I like to read them (though I choose not to participate when they get ugly) even when they are controversial because they afford us a learning opportunity. Then, those who want to read know ahead of time that they will be controversial if they know ahead of time these are "hot topic discussions". Then they can choose to participate or just read and walk away when their emotions get riled up. Good idea! |

It will never happen... Quote:
But not everyone cares about whether or not they are hurting other people. They feel so passionate about their subject that they think, "Tough Sh_ _ if I hurt anyone's feelings, I am gonna be HEARD!" There will always be people like that in this world. But hey, hearing a strong opinion, even if it hurts the original poster, gives everyone an opportunity to consider a line of reasoning they may never have thought of on their own. I appreciate the heated debates, no matter how nasty they get because I always learn something. I try to get past the nastiness and just concentrate on the subject matter. I think the moderators do a pretty good job closing threads that are hateful, and I appreciate them very much. I do think that having a "debate thread" is a recipe for emotional disaster, though. However, if having it keeps the other threads clean and simple, let's go for it! :D |
I think a debate section would be good. I think there would be less debating on regular threads if we had it. |
I thought we already had "debate threads" :D JK! |

I personally enjoy reading them and post too - I even learn something - but sometimes it just gets TO redundant because there are some people that just take it to new levels and never quit, or know when to back off, and they get WAY off subject. |
To add something to my post....I would be afraid a debate section would just give those that love to debate a new playground ...the section may get taken advantage of.... and we'd be seeing posts intended to create HUGE debates - rather than threads that are reasonable and interesting. That's pretty much what I've seen happen before also....it wasn't pretty. |
It will probably do 1 - 2 - 3 ..........BOOM , because some subjects seems to be very explosives . |

Those subjects don't HAVE to be explosive - lately certain 'explosive' subjects have been discussed and I think people are handling them really well....too bad it's not always like this though... :) |
I love the idea of a debate because that is when I learn the most! But having said that too many times we get into a debate on one new thread instead of taking it off thread. Many times I have wished that people not respond to the original question that we all know will take everyone over the top and scare new members or make them feel that it is a personal attack but start a new thread and hash it out there. Then people can tell these new members to go to the thread and they might not take it so personal. Also I think that valuable information gets lost in these threads because of the title and then new members can't even really search for all the valuable information that is on YT because it is buried in a thread. |
As someone still getting my wings here I find that anything can go from informative to heated over not hardly a thing. It depends on who and how someone reads it as well as their thoughts on the subject or even the thoughts about the person posting the info. I have posted a few times my thoughts on training and got some interesting responses to the posts that where out in left field. I am not interested in debating, discussion yes debate not so much. But I do think that a debate or hot topic area would be good for those that wish to spend time doing that and enjoy it. Joy |
I think a debate section would be God awful. It is fun, however, to watch other forums go down to hell by reading their debate sections. Why breed arguments that way? It's stupid. |
Also, I think the only reason any forum would have to make a debate section is to have an easy outlet to BAN members. |
I think a debate corner might be good, but there would have to be rules.. Like this is a debate not a fight!! |
As previously discussed, we will not be adding a debate section here at YorkieTalk. |
