Please HELP! Won't move after spay Ellie just got home and she won't get up. She just lays in the same position. She will pick up her head (especially if she hears a squeaky toy) but she refuses food. The other dogs getting released from the vet tonight walked around. Ellie barely sat for a minute when I moved her. She just wants to lay. She also had a liver biopsy today. I know she is in pain (yes she has meds) but I wasn't expecting this. Is this normal? Should she be moving around? |
did she just get spayed today? If so, she's probably still tired from the anethesia, my vets always kept mine overnight when they got spayed..but, now, my 5 year old yorkie just had a tumor removed about 4 weeks ago, I told them I wanted her back that night, where I would be here to watch her, they let her come home, but she just laid around the rest of the night...if she's doing this tomorrow, I would call the vet back, you may need to take her back in..but, if she was just spayed this morning, then she should be doing better by tomorrow.. |
Maybe the pain meds have her kinda konked out???? |
My female laid around the evening of the surgery...if not from the anethesia/surgery itself..perhaps the pain medicine.....if she's not perkier tomorrow...then I'd be concerned. |

I had my boy neutered and he was like that for 2 days! My vet said due to their size the anestesia (sp?) hits them hard! And the pain meds knocks them out for awhile too! I wouldn't worry about it tonight! make sure she is alert and aware, but give her at least 24 hours to just rest and be lazy! :) Kisses to your baby! :) |
She might still be knocked out. Aubrey was like that. He didnt eat the first night, I just put some nutri cal in him mouth and got a surrenge (?) and put water in there. |

This is normal , she just had surgery . She needs to stay quite . This is also normal that she refuses food . |
Thanks guys. I knew she would be tired but I just don't like to see her refuse to move. She has stretched since I posted. I will talk to the vet tomorrow if it continues. I don't know how in the world I will get her up to go pee. Oh yeah, she is awake on and off, so I think it is the pain. |
My Penelope was recently spayed and it took a couple of days before she would leave the couch. The only time she moved was when she absolutely had to eliminate. I brought her food and water, but she refused the food for at least a day, but would accept the water. I think they need time to heal and to rest and when they are feeling better and stronger will slowly begin to resume their normal activities. It has now been 7 days and she is just beginning to seem like herself and has resumed normal activities. I hope Ellie is feeling better soon.... :) </IMG> |
If you have stairs, perhaps you might want to consider carrying her outdoors to go to the bathroom... at least for the first couple of days? Penny refused the stairs and made it quite clear that it was an impossibility for her. |
Yes she did get spayed today. I think someone may have asked that. She will absolutely get carried up and down all stairs for atleast a week. |
When Lacy was spayed, I put her in a crate with a blanket over it as soon as I got home and left her in a quiet, dark room. I checked on her every once in a awhile and took her to potty. She wasn't fully awake and herself until the next day. I didn't feed her until the next day either. |
A few years ago, when my hubby's schnauzer got spayed, she wouldn't move either. She acted like she was going to die!!! My hubby sat up with her all night (I teased him, but he was being a good daddy). She was a little better the next day, and then a lot better on the third day. I'd keep a close eye on her though, as I'm sure you are! |
Crystal? Did the vet not give you a paper with a list of things on it? Like what to expect, and when to call? I know when I had this tumor removed a few weeks ago, the vet gave me a list, said to call if they didn't drink within a certain amt. of hours, etc |
I am staying up with her tonight. She is way too sensitive to meds/drugs to not be suprevised. Someone is coming over tomorrow to watch her for me so I can sleep.:) I did get instructions on activity level and exercise. They said she could try food tonight if she wants. I do have an open invitation to call the vet whenever I need to. She told me to call her if there were any concerns. Because of Ellie's liver issue I don't think this pain med is quite as good as some which is sad. I don't think we have much of a choice though. If she is still in a lot of pain tomorrow I will call the vet. As far as pottying goes, she won't. She just lays in the grass or on the pee pad. I will try again in a few hours. |
What pain med did they give her? I'm sorry she's not feeling well... |
She is quite a bit better today. She peed this morning and is walking somewhat now. I don't know if this pain med is strong enough though. I don't have the spelling of the med right now but it starts with a b and ends with norprine. I think the vet consulted an internist on it. Is this the right one to give? |

I hope she feels better soon!!!! I least she's walking. Call your vet if have questions, that way you don't worry too much. |
I'm so happy she's feeling a little bit better today. Keep us posted! |
I only just found your thread. Poor Baby and poor you, how worrisome. :(I am so happy she is doing better today. What a great Mommy you are - your baby can't help but improve with your loving care. Hope she has a better day today! Lauren:) |
I ended up calling the vet because one of Ellie's staples is almost out and others look loose. She said she has to do them loose because when the skin expands, if they are too tight, they get embedded. One or two can fall out anyway without concern since she has so many. I mentioned that the pain med isn't as strong as I would like but at the same time Ellie did jump today so I don't think she's as bad off as I think she is. She is much improved and is back to her piggy self about food.:) |
The pain med is Buprenorphine 3mg 2-3 times daily as needed |
Maybe between the spay and the liver biopsy she's just whooped. I'd call the vet in the am and ask his advice. |
Just now seeing your thread, sending prayers to you both, hopes she is up and around soon:) karleigh was out of it for a few days after her spay to. |
