we have a new vet!!! but i have a question So after putting it off WAY too long i called a new vet today. her name is Dr. Sears. OUr current vet is very old school. Back when i told him i was thinking of homecooking he thought itwas a horrible idea. He sells crap food that some company pays him to sell and he wants her vaccinated every year. Our new vet does not recommend home cooking as i dont' think she knows much about it but the receptionist said that she does have some patients that homecook and if that is what you choose then she just asks that you get blood panals every year (that was what i was calling to make an appointment for!) She also vaccinates every 3 years which i ALSO wanted! i'm SO SO SO happy. However, regarding my other vet....do i just stop calling there??? or do i call them and tell them i have switched... do i lie and say i have moved???? i worried they wil call for an appointment and i won't know what to say..... but i am just SO releived to get this blood panal done and know that i am doing a good job. I will also talk to her about raw, which i hope to be switching to soon! |
Ive never switched Vets before but dont you have to have the medical records sent to the new vet. That is the only contact I would have |

You can just call the new vet and have them call the old vet. They can have all the document sent over. You might have to sign some papers, but I think that is about it. Don't feel bad about changing vets it happens everyday. |

Let me tell you, I had a fantastic vet, he would always cut up with me(he's about my age), tell off the wall jokes, and I loved him to death..Well, I bought my first biewer almost 2 years ago(a little 5 1/2 mo. old one), anyway, I got a voucher and had him neutered, saved me quite a lot of money, but I had already spent a lot of money on this little guy, well, when I went in to pick him up after I had him neutered, there was about 5=6 people standing behind me..The vet came out, said hey ms sherrie, I said hey Dr Ross, then he said what kind of dog is fritz, I said a biewer, he said I bet he cost at least $2500, I said yeah, about, he said and I did this for charity..? Made me feel like I was 2 inches high..that was the last I saw of him, decided I would switch that day, which I did..You owe your vet no explanation as to why you're switching, you just don't go back. The vet I use now, asked when I called to get a puppy fixed, if I had a voucher, I said no, they said, well, get one, may as well get it done for less money..So, when I get Ginger spayed, it will cost me $45 and that includes the anesthesia.. |
Just sau that you decided to try a new vet that is willing to support you with the raw feeding. |
What kind of voucher are you talking about?? |
I think it's a Canadian thing.....we don't have such luck here! |
Hey Dee In the county I live in, we can go to the animal shelter and pay $45, this covers the anesthesai and spay or neuter..some of the vets won't take them, but a lot of them do..some of the other counties have these also, but I found out the other night, you have to be low income in those counties to get them..in my county, you just fill out the form as to your name, address, dog breed, etc. takes about 5 min. to fill the form out, you pay them and you get a voucher that you take with you when you take your pet to have it spayed/neutered..it really saves a bundle, saved me over $100 on that biewer I had |
It's not a Canadian thing, although I wish it was! |
When I changed vets I called and let my old vet know exactly why I was moving my dogs. Who knows, it may just help him to change his ways and be a better vet. |
Sophie went to the same vet for 13 years. Prior to adopting Charlie, I had a blood panel completed since he was 10 yo. with Sophie's vet. I went to a new vet and began Charlie's care although I still keep the other vet "in my back pocket" for emergency ie thyroid medication since they diagnosed and wormer,if necessary. Not a bad idea to keep ties with the older vet. |

Prior to initiating complete care with the new vet, I called the technician and told him honestly why I wasn't going to take Charlie to their vet hospital. I lost confidence and didn't like the alternate vets. He was so understanding and that eliminated the need to talk directly to the vet. In all honesty, vets are so busy that I don't think they notice. You have to remember that choosing a vet is the same as "Patients Bill of Rights" in health care. Also, Charlie's records were forwarded to the new vet and dental surgeon, so the vet is aware. I know it is difficult and we feel an obligation for their care in the past, but we need to feel confident when we walk out of their office with our pups. Something I have discovered though, most vets are not savvy about nutrition. They sell what the vendor pitches and that is why you see common products. Good luck and congratulations on striving for a healthy diet for your pup. Also, you are a wise woman to realize the overuse of vaccinations is harmful. Warmly, Deborah |
