??? about a female in heat A few months back I was given a Maltese doggie....some of you will remember after my Lexxi passed I was offered a "free" dog...I've never posted anything about her but I basically rescued this poor baby! Long story but she was never spayed. She had one heat while with the breeder and I have her and Gemma scheduled for their spay this Wednesday  ANYWHO....I think she (Lucy Lu) is in heat right now!! I've never had a dog go into heat so I'm not certain but her little cookie looks swollen to me (is that a sign?) and she is really licking there. And Truffles is very interested in Lucy's area too! It looks a bit red and I've dabbed her with kleenex and there is tiny tiny marks on the tissue but almost colorless, or maybe a faint pink. Can they spay while she is in heat??? And this lasts a couple of weeks? Well that was long just to finally ask that question! Sorry... |
Sounds like she is comming into heat. Spaying can be done when they are in heat, but my vet says it is a bit more complicated and she prefers to spay when they are out of heat. I personally would wait till shes out of heat as long as you can watch her closely during her heat. |
I am getting different opinions, of course. I'm going to call my 2 breeder friends just to see what the majority says...because I really don't want anything to go wrong!! I'm already a wreck when I have to take these little babies in! Anyone else have input? |
My little Lola went into heat at about the time she was scheduled for her spay and the vet said they HAD TO WAIT at least 6-8 weeks after her heat cycle was over until they could safely do the surgery. I was so nervous, but we waited and the surgery went just fine. |

My vet won't spay until 2 months after. |
Technically, it can be done, but isn't the best idea and some vets won't do it. One of the females in our family had it done due to special circumstances and other than being allergic to the stitches used (who'd have thought that?) she was perfectly fine. But again, it is not the norm and if you can wait without the possiblity of a male getting to her, it would be better. |
what will having a dog in heat be like? Well I appreciate all your input, even if I was hoping you'd say it was ok! Ok, if it is better to wait, can anyone tell me what the next couple of weeks will be like with her heat?? Messy? I guess I can use diapers but I'm not sure she will tell me when she has to potty?? Crap....I'm stressed now. But it sounds best to wait. I did ask the vet office, my vet was not there so they talked to another vet and told me it was ok to go ahead with it. Hmmmm? |
I've been told to wait for 6 weeks or longer after going into heat too. I acutally bought baby diapers for human babies - I got the preemie size since my girls are just over 3 pounds. I cut a hole for poopies & the tail. If they went wee-wee.... well, its a diaper. Worked like a charm! - Oh! put it on backwards, with the tape on the back so she can't tear it off. You might go through 2 or 3 diapers to see where to cut the hole. Hope it works for you. PS: Both my girls barely bled lots of licking between diapers so look out for those kisses! |
The actual bleeding only lasts for a few days, the rest of the heat is blood free, but she might be a little tempermental. My females want to pick fights, but a 'NO' from me usually keeps it in check. Just keep a close eye on her. Keep us posted! :) |
I would most definately wait. Spays can be done during their heat but it is messier. I believe there is also more of a bleeding risk. |
I would wait. Bleeding only happens for a few days. And if you can keep her from males 110% its worth the wait. My momther had a females sheltie spayed while she was in heat and after the surgery she never really came out of the heat (still bleeding and still swollen) the next morning she had passed away. We didn't know if it was something else (old age: she was 10) or if it was from the bleeding. But I would not take that chande, even if your vet is comforable doing the surgery. There are cute pet diapers you can buy for her to keep her from getting blood on things. But being that this is going to be you only time with a female in heat i wouldn't waist the $. I would keep her on a tile floor and just clean up after her for a couple days or go get a small bag of baby diapers. Good luck, and may both of them have a speedy recovery!!!! |
I wouldnt get her spayed untill after her heat |
Thank you everyone! I'm on my way with just Gemma...I will wait with Lucy Lu ;) |
