Fluid filled belly looks like a balloon Let's me say that this has been a confusing month, had to take chewie to er vet last month, he ate cat food, had diarreha, heavy panting, very weak. they took xrays( air,gas in intestines everything else ok blood workhigh white count ,low protien, low red count, vet wasn't sure, treated with iv fluids for dehydration , antibiotic, possible infection, took to regular vet the next day and they put him on science diet i/d wet and kibble. he seemed fine no diarreaha , loved new food. now a month later he acts fine, plays, eats, urinates defecates fine but his belly is huge and swollen. I take him to the vet who repaets with xrays, blood work, belly puncture, stool sample, no parasites, fluid clear ,but they say he is leaking protien into his abdomen. now they want me to do a bile acid test. i have run out of money and i don't know what to do , his liver looked fine on xray, not enlarged. he has always been skinny but never has his belly swelled like that before. i don't know what to do:confused: sinxce the abdomen punture the fluid has leaked out and he has never slowed down. |
It sounds like colitis, fluid builds up in the stomach and will eventually press on his lungs. Protein level is probably very high and my experience with Science Diet I/D should only be on a short term basis because if you read the ingredients, the nutrition is not good. Strongly advise another vet and there are links on YT about this condition. Leaking is definitely not normal, puncture is only a band aid for the core issue of the illness. I hope you are able to find another vet and hopefully they will allow you to stretch out the payments. Warmly, Deborah |

Wow, that sounds like it could be ascites...I would definitely have the bile acid test done. This could be very, very serious... |
Toby my 16 yo blew up like that. Did they drain chewie? If they did I bet it was pure protein. This happened to Toby twice. I had a post on it in June. The diet Toby is on now is Royal Canin. He is on a 1/2 of pill of Prednisone a day and we mix a cap full of MCT oil in his food. Also we put a pinch of Polycitrate crystals in his food as well. If you want more info just pm me. |
